how to adjust gear linkage on GTI?
Does anyone know how to adjust the gear linkage on a 6n2 gti please? i have had my clutch changed but now 1st gear seems to be a bugger to get into. It doesnt crunch or anything just really awkward to get into gear - any suggestions?

The gear linkage is not really adjustable..... has the linkage been re-installed properly after the gearbox was put back in?
Failing that... has the clutch been put in incorrectly meaning it doesnt properly disengage?

Are you sure? I thought they were on all manual gearboxes?

Have a look under neath at the back of the gearbox where the selector shaft is... I dont think there is much that can be "adjusted"... it is easy to assemble it incorrectly though!

Its two cables that shift on the polos. Its a very complex and precise task to realign the cables to the box, and for a perfect shift, youll need to visit a dealer as they have a jig for getting the adjustments right

If you could please that would be much appreciated.
May ring a few VW specialists tomorrow to see if this is something they would be able to look at

Alex you wouldn't know why this would be happening would you?
I had a brand new clutch (LUK clutch kit) and clutch cable (straight from VW dealer) fitted on the Friday. Picked it up drove it and seemed fine, 5 miles later it stars playing up, ie I really had to push sideways with force to get first. Didnt think much of it, thinking it may just need time to settle in.
Now I cant ge first or second at all - I go for what should be first and I get third, I go for second and I get fourth???
Its really stressing me out now :S
I cant even drive it back to the garage as I dont want to be pulling off in third gear all the time as I will be damaging what is a brand new clutch.

Thats a definite linkage issue - your pedal isnt creaking is it (just want to rule it out!)
It sounds as though they have misaligned it when reattaching it

Re: how to adjust gear linkage on GTI?
No creaking from the pedal box mate, and no noises coming from the gearbox (no crunching or whining)
I'd like to think too that I can rule out gearbox failure for obvious reasons
Garage I took it too is a good 20 miles from me so Im not quite sure how I am going to get it back!
My VW dealer is much closer so was thinking it might just be easier to go directly to them, even though it would put me out of pocket. I just want to get it sorted!

Re: how to adjust gear linkage on GTI?
Yes its definately a jig adjustment - it requires points of reference that you cant measure without having a jig to do it. Id call the garage and have a word with them - they should come to you and fix it! At the end of the day its their fault, so let them fix it at their cost.

Good point, I will be ringing the garage first thing Monday morning to see what he says, as you quite rightly say the fault lies with them at the end of the day.
Thanks again for your help Alex - will let you know how I get on with it all.
