To be honest Tom there isnt a great deal you can do without spending mega bucks.
Although it may sound a little extreme the quickest/cheapest way to get a lot more power from the Polo would be a NOS Kit.
They are about £600 for a Wet Nitrous Kit and you can get them in 25, 50, 75, 100, 150 & 200 shots.
The "Shot" represents the amount of power the car will be given, for example 50 shot will give you a 50bhp gain.
Insurance will hit you badly though but it does sound cool saying your riding with NOS
Failing that you could get yourself a decent performance exhaust, get it de-catted, Chip tuned/re-mapped, Induction kit with decent air feed and maybe Schrick Cams. It all depends what your budget is really, engine transplant would be a good way to get a big power improvement but they can be costly.
Another good way to make the car go faster is to put it on a Diet
Strip out the back seats and replace the two front seats with lightweight bucket seats.
