Secondary Speed Display - Sorted!

Post by wobbler »

Managed to get rid of the permanent 'Secondary Speed Display' on the GTI with a few clicks of the mouse using VCDS.

Just changed the coding of the cluster to Australia and it works a treat!

Now the temperature is in it's proper place at the bottom and I can select mph as I scroll through the MFD options :)

All I have to do now is get rid of the halogen DRLs.. They really wind me up!

Just had another fiddle with VDCS and have now done the following:

Teardrop wipe
Speed dependant wipers (they drop down the next lowest setting when you stop)
Disabled selective unlocking (I've always hated this on VWs)
Enabled locking after 15kph
Enabled unlocking when key removed.

The DRL's on the front look like they could now be hard wired as when I deselect the option for DRLs the tail lights now dont go on, but the front ones still do. Will have to do some more digging. You guys with Xenons wont have this issue as you have a different BCM.

The teardrop wipe activates after you spray your window. It will normally wipe a few times, but with the teardrop wipe it does another wipe a couple of seconds later to catch the dribble.

You need the HEX+CAN VCDS cable. The Micro-CAN VCDS cable (which is cheaper) is for Golf V technology cars only. The 6R is a hybrid of old (K-lines) and new (CAN lines) technology so you need the (more expensive  ) cable that does them both.

They turn up on ebay from time to time where they fetch good money. Or a new one is available from a couple of UK distributors. If you bought a new one and did the things you wanted to do then sold it again I reckon you'd only lose around £50.

You know, I reckon you're onto a winner with the switch. I've read on some US VAG forums that people were changing their light switches to Euro ones to get rid of their running lights

i have a Hex can cable. Any chance you can do a guide on how to;

1, Put up the mph display
2, Turn off the rear lights.

Thanks

Look up Rosstech - they are the only cables you know will work.
