Lowering springs from reputable companies generally keep the same overall spring rate (bar the rears becoming progressive rate) so your shocks will be fine. If you go too low though, then you will build pressure in teh shocks and cause premature wear by the piston not working in it's optimal damping range.

Re: Shcoks
Definitely wouldn't be going too low cause i'd not be able to get into my drive, mud flaps are constantly scrapping on it and id say if i got the 35/50 springs the skirts would start catching so 25/40 it is

Re: Shcoks
From personal experience I can say that the H&R 25/40 are perfectly driveable with the standard (non-sport) shocks, but would benefit from shocks with a slightly stiffer rebound damping especially at the front. The spring rates are somewhat higher than standard, so the front of the car tends to bounce higher than necessary on rebound, when going over speedbumps or similar 'humps'. The bounce was amplified after fitting the lowering springs, so they're definitely higher rate than standard springs since the shockers remained the same.
To get the last few mils out of the springs, be sure to loosen the bolts that the suspension arms pivot around. Only retighten them when the car has the new springs and is back standing on its wheels.
And as for the original VW mudflaps: If you have the long 'elefant ear' versions, VW now sell shorter ones. No more scraping.
