is anyone running their gti on lower then the recommend 39 an 36 my car was 30 all round(first time id checked it) but the ride seems worse now :(

The ride will of course be firmer as you have removed the compliance out of the tyre flexing. Aside from a limited contact patch on under-inflated tyres, your sidewalls will flex potentially too far in hard cornering which can lead to premature failure(rare) of the sidewall or (less rare and really quite annoying when it happens, aside from scaring the crap out of you thinking part of your car has just exploded!) the bead can pop off and deflate the tyre.

If you don't mind higher fuel consumption and premature tyre wear at the expense of comfort, 36 front and 33 rear should be ok. Also remember to check the pressures when hot, not cold. It's the hot temperature reading that is the true pressure when you are driving, not the one when you first take off in the morning :)
