1.4 TDI.. What's the difference?

Post by nigelelliott394 »

Hi!

The last 2 cars I've owned before my GTI were diesel... and I kinda miss it. I've had the GTI a year now and whilst it's great fun it's hugely sore on petrol and tax and insurance. I don't really feel like I can afford to do everything I want to do with it anymore whilst continuing to run it so I'm considering a switch back to diesel. I have my heart set on the 1.4 TDI, It's cheap to run and tax and has great MPG. I hear they pack a little punch too... this is what I'm confused with though.

In the 9n3 there seems to be 2 variations of the 1.4 TDI. The 70bhp version... and the 80bhp. Naturally, I want to get the 80... however, they are hard to come by. I'm wondering what the difference is between the 70 and the 80 though? Is it engine internals or just the ECU map? There are many more 70's about to buy so if it was literally just the ECU map then it'd be a no brainer, i'd just get it remapped to what the 80 could achieve (180ish lb/ft torque).

If possible, can anyone fill me in on the differences between the 2 variations? I'd really appreciate it and it'd help in my search!

Thanks! :)

Nothing at all. Engine codes are different, but all the hardware's exactly the same. 465cc injectors and Garrett GT1544S turbo. It'll be the software, as both the 70 and 80bhp (and the older 75bhp unit found in the 6n2 and 9n) units put out the same figures when remapped.

It's just marketing - the 1.4 TDI (70) replaces 1.9 SDI which was in the 9n model lineup. The 1.4 TDI (80) is the replacement for the "old" 75 bhp unit.

The Bluemotion came with a different turbo (VNT, KKK BV39). Spools up slightly quicker, but that's about it. Oh, and they come with those pesky DPFs...

KITT, thanks a ton buddy :D You've made my search for the next car a lot easier! If they all map out to the same then it's a no brainer which one to go for ;)

If budget allows, try and stretch to one built in '07 or later - £30 to tax.

Just noticed that this morning searching the autotrader :) cheers for the heads up ;)

I may be in contact with you soon about remaps. You seem to really know your stuff about these little engines so I'm sure I can trust your advice :)
