6N2 Questions! help is appreciated.

Post by Michael! »

on the 25th im picking up a 6n2! my first VW and im pretty excited! ive been a member on various forums belonging to the ford marque for years but never a vw one!

this looked like a friendly one so i thought id sign up and ask for advice and things to look for when buying as with all cars (fords especially) certain makes have certain faults!
and seeing as though it needs an mot to be on the road i thought i could do with the help.

anyway its a dark grey (unsure on exact colour) 6n2 1.4 16v! suspect its the 75bhp model but unsure.

its lowered on a set of coilovers but the helper springs have shattered slightly - will this affect its mot?
and did the polo "s" come with rear disks as standard?

should i be looking out for anything in the way of bodywork - i.e rust? and are there any parts you'd recommend replacing after ive bought it.

thanks, michael!

Welcome to the site

The shattered springs could fail an MOT, so worth looking at sorting them out

The bodies on these are fully galvanised, so rust is almost impossible unless the bodywork is damaged and the seal is perforated.

Normally, the 1.4 16V models came with rear discs. The 1.4 8v had drums.

welcome :)

want to see some pictures when you get it ;)

proberbly the most common things you are likely to have problems with are the electric windows and central locking,

also the rear washer pipe falls off quite easy and leaks water inside the bootlid, boot light stops working and no light on the dash because of this

water can also get into the footwells from a few diffrent ways so i would look for any signs of damp in the carpets or anything like that

gearbox's arn't these cars strong point so nake sure it goes into all gears easy without any noises (mine is really bad going into reverse)

abs sensors are known to be funny so if you get a abs warning dont worry it is proberly just the sensor

also check out this thread, this should tell you everythign you need to know :)

Welcome to the site, when you get the car check the engine code on the sticker inside the boot next to the spare wheel. I own a 6N2 1.4 16v and the engine code is AUB, therefore it is one of the 100bhp ones which are rare apparently :D.

•75bhp Codes - AHW, APE & AUA
•100bhp Codes - AFH, AFK, AQQ & AUB

I too was excited about picking up my 6N2 as it is my first car and I love everything about it especially how quick it is and how good it handles; although that could just be because I'm 18 and haven't driven many cars. I joined this forum and started my own thread Polo 6n2 1.4 16v - My First Car allowing me to show off my pride and joy.

Cheers for the replies! I'll check out the code! What did yours come up with in your insurance?

And thanks for the bodywork/rear disks pointer too!

Gonna get some pictures tomorrow I'll pop them up - hopefully mot'd by the end of next week then on the road the following Friday :D

Yes, because your girlfriend (or the first owner) might have ordered it with discs. The model 1.4 16V 75bhp came with drums as standard. Allow me to know better...

It wasn't an option. I think you'll find the SE model came with discs

To add, a friends SE had rear discs too!

Anyone tell me if gti shocks and springs fit a 1.4s?

It needs new coilovers for its mot and I don't have time or money yet!

GTI shocks and springs will fit a 1.4 no problem

Might be a slightly firmer ride though as the GTI ones are designed for a heavier block.

cheers buddy, im not fussed about ride quality as it just needs to get through an mot with them on.

the coilovers now have no helpers and are FAR to low to get onto ramps.

also do you know anyone in the north west that does chassis notching?!

I see

No i dont im afraid. Im down south!

Also, bear in mind MOTs going forward are getting alot more stringent on chassis mods with lowered suspension fitted or not. They can fail a car for it nowadays.
