New to 6N's. Help needed

Post by mayfairmad »

Morning All,

For the first time in a long time i have bought myself a "modern" car. A 1995 VW Polo 6N 1.0L.

Currently i have had a big issue with the car. It won't start! All i did was change a radio.

I have checked the fuses and checked the relays they are all OK. I turn the car on the the dash lights come on as normal and the fuel pump primes.
All the electrics such as radio, lights, warning buzzer for lights etc all work as normal.
When i turn the car over it will not catch. There is a contant 12v to both hall sensor and coil amplifier. When the car is turned over there is a alternating +ve to -ve voltage from the green (center) wire on the hall sensor plug.
At the coil amp end there is no signal voltage on the green (center) wire on the coil.

Im now at a loss i have searched the tinterweb and can only come up with a few solutions all of which i have tried.

Please Help

Have you checked the fuses on the battery

Did it start before changing the radio? on some of the early 6ns, the radio is linked to the immobiliser.

There are no fuses on the battery.

Yes it started before the radio was changed. There was a non standard radio in it before i changed it.

Thats interesting

It implies there is most definately an electrical fault of some description.

Does it try and start, just not fire?

I guess youve checked for a spark?

I have tried for a spark. There is none.

The engine turns over, tries to go there is no bang. ignition coil has been changed for a known working one.
Its driving me crazy

Interesting. Hall sender could be playing up. The 95s have the older style 1L engine. Was a common issue on this.

The hall sensor has been replaced the dizzy is of a 1.4 polo.
I have searched everywhere for information no where seems to know and I am trying to avoid taking it to VW to be fixed as I know they will rip me off as Will other garages

I do know theres some differences between the 1.0 and the 1.4 electrics etc of this era especially

A decent local garage shouldnt charge much at all, especially if its only something simple.

Well i have changed the ECU, Immobilizer and starter barrel + switch with known work assets.

The car now starts but accelerates to around 3k RPM idle and will not slow down. I try to rev the engine and it immediately cuts out.

Slowly getting there but now i have this problem.
