I can't get my front side grills out lol

Post by aaronon »

Any advice?

I know it's EASY AS PI for someone with fog grills. . . as they have a hole and you stick the wee tool in and bobs your uncle.

But I have a model without fog lights. . . which I wish to upgrade to a fog model. Problem is I can't get the original grills out as there's nothing to pull on. . .it's just sealed plastic.

Reckon it's a trip to VW? :(

They must be removable did the coat hanger job not sort it?

You can see on the above pic where the fastening clips are located... Maybe try using that as a guide to pull the covers off? See how it goes pal if your worried about it breaking then let vw do it :)

Can you not use the wire hook for the wheel trims to slide into those slats and pull them off? Is that the coat hanger thing? Maybe get a trim removal tool (plastic lever type things) and see if you can get one between the paint and the plastic?

If it's being difficult and you're replacing them anyway I'd certainly be tempted to just drill a large hole or two to be able to get more of a grip on it...

Coat hanger sounds perfect but unlike yours in the picture mine have no holes! :(

I'm afraid of putting the tool in between the paint and grill incase I cause scratches?

Just rip them out, you break the two innermost clips off them no matter how much care you take with them, you probably aren't going to use them again anyways! :P
If you use a plastic trim removal tool and work your way round the surround from the innermost clip, then once it's mostly pried out, pull it out, not too much, and pull them out towards the side. The plastic trim removal tool won't damage the grill because it has the same amount of flex as the grill whereas using a screwdriver doesn't.

Hope this helps. :)

if you open up the bonnet and go in through there you can pretty much just pop them out with a little force. i done the exact same with mine as mine came standard with no fog lights!

So start from arrow one, put in a flat head screw driver or trim removal tool in there and pry out, don't worry, you won't damage the paint! Then carry on working your way around point 2 and 3, then pull out towards yourself a little and then pull them out to the sides as there location clips at point 4 which will stop you pulling them straight out. :)

Awesome picture!!

I'm going to check I definitely have the removal tool and that they don't just give them to folk who need them to replace fogs!!

Is it literally slim enough to fit between the paint and the grill? I mean they are almost touching!

I'm excited now lol

Hi everyone!!!

The side grills came out easy as anything!!!

The centre grill was hard but got it out.

Any way. Took out all the grills. Screwed in my fogs... Put in my centre grill... Took the side fog grills out of the package... And VW HAD SENT ME THE ORIGINAL NON FOGLIGHT GRILLS. Lol.

I was absolutely gutted.

So took out the fogs and have jammed my originals back in. Gonna phone on Monday and ask them to order the right ones. Think it'll take 3 days.

Does anyone happen to know the part numbers for the fog light grills just incase he orders me the wrong ones again?

Haha yeah! Might need to do that :p Hopefully ill explain and he'll get the part as its not rocket science!

When putting the fog grills on again... Which not do you clip in first? The fog end or the end which connects to the centre grill?

@aaronon, I am watching this interest as I am interested in doing the same.
How are you gonna plan to wire the lights ?
Have you sourced a wiring harness ?
Have you sourced the new dash switch ?

Thanks.

Loom is here:

Switch is £60-70 I think but apparently it's the EXACT same as ones from previous VW's and therefore is available on ebay here:

Still haven't decided whether to wire it up as apparently some BMC's aren't simple to hook the fogs up to. I think ill just do it for looks? I can't find the BMC number and still wouldn't be sure about installing them. I post fitted fogs in my 9N3 and noticed that my lights used to blow a lot more (and on the dash there'd be no front fog light showing up, only the rear so it always felt a bit unofficial)
