i am turning 17 next week and i was looking at getting a mkv polo, is that a good idea or would i be better of buying a older one i have up to £2600 to spend on one.

You could get a tidy 6N2 polo for around £1500. A 1.0 MPI might be a good choice to get you started, Alexperkins had one for his first car and was very fond of it. Cheap insurance and tax too!

1.0 or a 1.4 8V is probably a good start - gotta contemplate insurance costs too

I bought a Y reg 6n2 last week for £500 all it wanted was a rear brake cylinder and mot didnt realise i got that good of a deal if they are worth £1500
