My girlfriend has just bought a 2013 polo 1.2 3 cylinder..
Are these engines normally noisey??
If this was a 4 cylinder engine I would say it sounded like it it had an engine knock but I have no idea what a 3 cylinder engine should sound like...
your comments would be gratefully received....

We have a 2012 1.2 with 14,000 miles on it.
Yes the engine does make an odd noise, being a three cylinder.
Although you cannot hear it in the car, if you drive with the windows open you can sometimes hear what appears to be a knocking noise from the engine on ours.
I think it gives the car character, but some would disagree.
The new low-end Polo has the 1.0 litre 3 cylinder engine from the Up, which is supposed to be better.
But l am happy with ours.
Note that if you have the 60hp there is little to be gained from revving the unit to the red line, better to change up early as there is a fair bit of torque at lower RPM.
And it makes less noise!

The gruff sound is a "feature" of the three cylinder engine.
There is nothing wrong with yours. People get so used to silent cars these days that they are shocked when they can hear something going on under the bonnet.
One road test described it as a "warbling" and another said it was just "noisy"

Yes it is normal. althought some would say the car isn't very noisy at all, provided you turn the radio up!

No, it's not obtrusively noisy at all.
I actually like hearing what the engine is doing. You can't really hear it at motorway speeds though, unless you are in fourth gear for some reason (say going over the M62 to Yorkshire)
