10k mile oil service question

Post by Faye_Valentine »

My BlueGT is flashing up '300 miles to oil change' on the dash, which presumably is for the 10k/1 year first service. I'm on a VW service plan and it clearly states in the service documentation 10,000 miles or 12 months, whichever is sooner, which is fine.

The car is 12 months old in November (bought brand new, first owner) and it's only on 8,700 miles so the issue is that neither requirement for the service reminder is actually true at the moment!

The only explanation I could think of is I ordered the car this time last year and it look 12-13 weeks to arrive at the dealer after being built in Spain, so could this 12 months actually be the 12 months from when it was built, rather than the 12 months from delivery?

In which case, do I take it when the car says to take it in 300 miles time or do I wait til 10k miles comes around (as that will inevitably be before November) as that's what my service plan states?

Ask your dealer I guess, maybe they should have reset this at delivery, I'm not sure.

I would change the engine oil at 12 month intervals, regardless of mileage.

I would personally change when the car tells you..
It judges it by the quality of the oil i think..
Last thing you want to do is be running knackered oil in the car for a few hundred miles until november.

The oil servixing is dynamic. The intervals can adjust like Chris says Depending on engine load and driving habits.

If the car has no turbo, it's not so much of an issue.
Modern oils are very good, and still do their job even when they have gone black, which in the old days meant time to change it.

However it only costs £40 to change the oil/filter, and it is such an easy job on the Polo, that l change it annually anyway.
