Occasional struggle to start

Post by Harry0612 »

Hi,
Recently my 6N2 polo has been playing up slightly in that it ocassionaly wont start. From the cold start i.e overnight, it is fine. The problem arises when it has been driven, I have stopped and turned off the engine, then go to turn it on again a few minutes laterand it will turnover and refuse to start. If the ignition is held on it usually starts but recently i have been experiencing problems with this. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this problem, and any way to rectify it.

Many Thanks
Harry

Hi Harry

It's the coolant temperature sensor that causes this. It's a common fail point

Get down your local vw dealer and get a genuine sensor and seal plus a bottle of G13 coolant to top it up. Theres a guide in the diy section on how to change it

I wouldn't recommend anything but a genuine sensor as the copy ones tend to fail

I have this exact same problem. From time to time. It only does that when i have driven the car a short distance and switch off the engine. Then start it up after say 20 mins it wont start, its not always that long it can happen after a few mins. But it doesnt do it all the time.

When this does happen i have to press the accelerator down with turning it over and even then it struggles to start. Its a really odd problem.

Did the coolant temperature sensor fix the issue for you?

Sorry, I've been off for a while so have only just picked up this thread again-apologies!

Thank you for your advice, it is greatly appreciated. I shall visit my local VW garage this weekend to get hold of the part and then get back to you once it has been fitted!

I have also been reading online that this problem could be to do with a vapour lock somewhere? How likely is it that this is the cause and is this anything that will be solved by a new coolant temp sensor?

Many Thanks

Itll more than likely be an electrical fault

Alan (above) had his coolant temp changed yesterday and it seems to have improved things :)

Hi, yes I have had the temp sensor changed yesterday. Not had any problems yet, but keep you informed after a week it's been in.

Changed the temp sensor at the weekend and seems to have made a massive improvement to my car. Now seems to start and run much more smoothly and touchwood no starting problems yet. Thanks for all your help!

The problems i had before changing the temp sensor has cured it for my car! One small thing that can cause your car to run like crap.
