BUT, i need one which doesn't take up much of the boot!
What are my alternatives?
Is it possible to have a sub (a good one), without a box?

alternatives, um, one that goes in the roof?

the polo boot aint that big a space, it's not much bigger than some lowrider bass-heads sub boxes (which is why bass speakers in a stealth shelf can do quite well - it resounds). even my own stealth install (a couple big woofers, a couple tweeters tacked to the underside with a half inch thickness of MDF for mounting) causes a bit of trouble with boot capacity from time to time, if i want to properly fill the boot i have to take the shelf out then see if it can be fit back in when everything's in place!
real alternatives....?
1. passenger footwell ... there's a fair bit of space behind the glovebox and underneath it, and behind the centre console, if you dont mind a bit of cutting and a LOT of contortions - plus do you want your sub that far forwards?
1a - under the bonnet. you'll probably need two big ones, but there's plenty space if you're clever and dont interrupt air flow. plus you'll have a real party piece for cruises (esp. if you cut sound-vents in the bonnet) and can hook them up to a sound module to get an easy, kick-ass engine noise upgrade... that can be instantly turned off if the rozzers come looking (or your head starts to hurt)
2. under the front seats (pref. passenger side). Will, of course, involve taking the seat out and maybe doing a fair bit of mods to the mounts etc. if you're hardcore, make a hole in the chassis

oh yeah and unless your passengers like sitting on subs at the club (or its a young lady you're out to stealthily get hot) they'll need some insulating pants
3. between the rear seats... if you cut a hole in the middle where the "fifth" passenger would go. because we all know it's a mugs game getting 5 in a polo anyhow

(or... underneath THEM somehow?)
4. in the spare wheel well - just carry a can of that instant reinflator and patcher stuff instead and drive paranoid. you can get a pretty wide sub in there to boot.
5. two smaller subs, one mounted in each of the mysterious cubby holes at the sides of the boot (stretching down below the rear lights and forwards over the wheel arches - you know where i mean?). Doesn't impact realistically on boot space and still has some kind of sounding space. Won't be able to go down real low though, unless you get hold of some of those clever space-saver models that vibrate smarter, not harder (um... like... the cone moves further rather than being wider?)
none of those enclosures will offer anything like the well-engineered resonant quality and amplification of a properly designed and built bass box though. just make it an easily-removable box? bass when you want it, carrying space when you need it! (such as the thought behind my shelf... i'm thinking of rearranging it and fitting a modest 10" sub on there

)
or... just get a roofrack. DubEnvy would be proud of you.
