To Lower or not to lower !

Post by robertsm66 »

Hi All
Looking for your thoughts and advice.

So I'm just about to press the button on a new set of H & R 25mm / 40mm lowering springs and 8mm (16mm) / 10mm (20mm) H & R Spacers for my remapped 1.2TSI SEL.

I bought the car as a second econical vehicle for commuting to work for business mileage although I've got the modding bug again and have already spent a bit on new alloys & tyres, R Line Rear bumper, PDC / OPS, RNS315, MFSW, Re-map and a few other bits.

I bought the Polo as reviews said it was really refined at speed on the motorway and the 1.2TSI vairant was still interesting to drive while economical. For example it costs me £18 for a round trip to Cambridge (246miles) where as my main car costs me £70, so a massive saving. I love driving it as well.

So if I now proceed and lower the vehicle plus add the spacers, is it going to become uncomfortable and a bit harsh and therefore a bit pointless considering the reason I bought it in the first place. Or will it not alter the ride that much, and just look tonnes better ?

Am I thinking about this too much and I should just get on with it and take some pics and post them ?!?!?!

Thanks in advance

IMHO, a lowered car just looks as if you're driving 4 fat passengers and/or a few bags of cement around :D

I think a lowered car looks great

Mines on H&R 35/55 and it is honestly really hard, have to slow right down for speed bumps and i'm forever scanning the road for potholes. I only have a short commute and I can live with it, but its not the most comfortable car on a long journey. Maybe a slight drop on eibachs or the H&R 25/40 would be a good compromise, have heard the 25/40 are a lot softer than mine.

But then again I couldn't live with the 4x4 look

Mines on h&r 25/40 sits spot on and drives fine not too hard, never scrapes on speed bumps even with splitter on

Ste J, yours does look nice lowered with Boavista's on. I've got the same wheels too. Still has a OEM look to it which is what I'm looking for.

I could always try it and swap the springs back if I'm not happy.

Is the GTI lower as standard ?

A friend of mine has a 1.2tdi 75ps, and it's running on my old GTI springs after I changed mine for some Eibach's.

Looks nice now, not too low, and the ride is more controlled and slightly stiffer without being harsh at all. Clears speed bumps and fenland road dips and crests fine too.

That's impressive economy from the 1.2tsi, what remap are you running and power etc?

Celtic tunning stage 1 132BhP, can't remember the torque figures. I get 48mpg average around 85mph when on the autobahn obviously. If I hang around 70mph I can get mid to late 50 's in mpg.

Great little engine.
