Mk 1 Steering Problem - any ideas?

Post by johnphilip »

I'm a newcomer to Polos so any help would be appreciated. Problem is very loose steering when driving - fine while stationary, no worn joints or linkages, but hit a bump while mobile and car adopts a new line all by itself! Word of wisdom from someone? Thanks.

At a long shot, have you checked the steering rack?

Karl.

Thanks - doubt it but I'll check. No play while stationary but very loose when mobile. Suspension strut bushes?

The MK1 steering is generally very light anyway, especially with the standard steering wheel and the 4.5 x 13 steel wheels on. You can adjust the preload on the steering rack which will stiffen up the steering, but it's a real bugger to get at with the engine in the car. It's a small bolt located at the bottom of the rack, facing the floor. You could try fitting the later rack which has a steering damper.
Only thing you can do here is to check all of the steering pivots for play, and of course, get the tracking checked just in case it's causing the problem.

Good luck
