Emissions scandle. Do people think the TSI is next?
Emissions scandle. Do people think the TSI is next?
The telegraph is reporting VW petrol engines may have defeat device software to lower CO2 emmisions. If true the car will need detuneing to meet the law.
Where will this leave owners. Could people potentially walk away from PCPs?

Re: Emissions scandle. Do people think the TSI is next?
Considering VW have already given me two months payment back for the fact my car has been in for faulty windscreens and a faulty ECU, if they detune my BlueGT I want ALL my money back! They can take my time, but they'll never take my TSI!rsmagee wrote:The telegraph is reporting VW petrol engines may have defeat device software to lower CO2 emmisions. On a serious note, the SMMT has issued a statement saying it isn't industry wide and it can't happen in the UK as cars are randomly pulled from the production line and tested with an independent body watching. It's also related to NOx rather than CO2, the former is produced in far higher numbers in diesel cars. This is why larger diesel vehicles now have an AdBlue tank, which injects into the exhaust gas to combat the NOx. Our TSIs should be safe, but don't quote me on that one. Not sure what the policy is on links here, so not added it.

Re: Emissions scandle. Do people think the TSI is next?
Highly unlikely it will affect cars sold in the EU/UK. Given that the EU limit for NOx is 80mg/Km and the US is 31mg/Km, there is no current justification that EU laws have been broken only that the US laws have been. I wouldn't be surprised if VW start to push their TSI technology far more in order to make up in the shortfall in diesel sales. Diesels are not as popular in the US but still account for around 24% of total sales.
Most diesel personal vehicles in the US are pick up TRUCKS (Ford and GM in the main) and not subject to the same laws, this could very well be the US government backing Ford and GM to support their own economy (again).
That said VW quite deservedly should have their fingers burned for "cheating" Lets be honest VW customer service and lack of owning up to obvious faults has gone on for years. Just look at the number of TSi's that drink oil like it's going out of fashion and the problems with timing chains stretching. Have they done the decent thing and recalled the vehicles involved??? VW are fast becoming the Arthur Daley of motor manufacturers. Given what they charge for their vehicles they should be top of the pile for service and customer care, not near bottom.
On a lighter note, give it a few months and we will be knee deep in cheap second-hand diesels....![Very Happy :D](./images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif)

Sounds great to me as my next car I'll be going back to diesel due to my mileage!wolfie wrote: On a lighter note, give it a few months and we will be knee deep in cheap second-hand diesels....

The doodoo is getting deeper.
VW have just confirmed that they have used the same software fudge within the EU. "Germany's transport minister says Volkswagen has admitted using the same fake emissions test in Europe as it used to falsify results in the US." It's doesn't look like its confined to the 2.0 either, the 1.6 diesel is now in the frame. I'm betting there are some twitchy bottoms inside VWHQ at the moment.
It's also threatening to ensnare BMW with their share price falling almost 10%. Probably scare mongering but they are saying that the financial effects could be worse that the markets have seen with Greece.

Re: Emissions scandle. Do people think the TSI is next?
The key issue with the VW diesel 'scandal' is the NOx emissions, not C02.
Manufacturers are already capable of manipulating results in EU C02 testing without the need for special defeat devices. The Telegraph covered that quite neatly here today. So I'm less convinced that VW would even need to resort to specialist software for EU testing, when they can already design and tune a car to get great results anyway.
I'm still less convinced that only VAG are going to be affected by this. Given how many different companies use the same suppliers, such as Bosch for example, I find it hard to believe that no one else has used software to circumvent NOx testing.

Same here, I'm waiting for the next manufacturer to stick their head above the parapet. A few sites are muttering "BMW"Redline wrote: I'm still less convinced that only VAG are going to be affected by this. No harm in that "spread the love!" - maybe Germany will not need all these poor migrants to keep their industries running now?wolfie wrote:Same here, I'm waiting for the next manufacturer to stick their head above the parapet. Re: Emissions scandle. Do people think the TSI is next?
Putting emissions aside for a moment how about the other tricks that manufacturers use, an obvious example the 'quiet' legal exhaust that at the touch of a button or at certain Rev/throttle combinations opens a flap to by pass the silencers, cheat or legitimate? Much as I like the sound of a finely tuned engine I'm hoping it will be deemed illegal or, as a working compromise somebody will steal the Aston Martin that one of my least favourite neighbours ruins my sleep with every weekday morning.
Can anybody think of any other obvious cheats?

I'm completely sure that VW aren't the last manufacturer to get shamed by this. Of course, this doesn't change the fact that what they did was very wrong, but I'm quite sure that other manufacturers are just as sneaky as VW have been.
It's interesting to hear about the idea of all the 2.0 TDIs being affected, not just the US market ones. I know that the EU regulations are a lot less strict than the US ones, do the 2.0 TDIs sold in the UK comply with our regulations?

Has there been a pause on the production of Diesel engines then? Hopefully the petrols get pushed through faster as I'm still waiting for my gti!

If the US vehicles with the 'defeat' disabled in normal driving were 30 or 40 times the allowable Nox limit, then that would put them way over the EU limit too....
