Hi,
Recently picked up a small chip the windscreen of my 2015 6C GTI. The chip is about 3/4 of the way up and in front of where the passenger sits. It is only a 2-3 mm wide (if that!). I had it repaired by National Windscreens in the week but it still not quite right - it really bugs me as the car is otherwise perfect and I am extremely fussy!
So I was wondering about getting a replacement windscreen but was worried that getting a new one could create more problems (eg damaging the paint by putting a new one in, or making a leak).
So has anyone on here had a windscreen replaced on their 6R/6C and what kind of job was made of it? I presume that a GTI windscreen would be no different to any other 6R/6C screen.... Surely a universal part?
Cheers

Re: Windscreen Replacement
Can you elaborate on what you're not happy about? Is it that you don't like that there is still a mark of the repaired chip, or are you saying that despite an attempt to repair it, it looks more or less the same?
Did you sign the repairer's job card to accept what he'd done?

Re: Windscreen Replacement
The repair on that chip is probably good enough, ie it will stop the windscreen cracking, but, I am very fussy too and yes once you know where these chips have been you will be able to find them after the repair - until you have something else to worry about, As I said in your other version of this thread, in my mind, replacing the (bonded) windscreen is not a good thing to get done unless it is really required - then it must be done.
I've been lucky so far and only had chips repaired on the front screen, though I did need to get a rear screen refitted on a Ford Fiesta due to Ford messing up on the design requirements for the original seal fitted at factory which meant a corner or two kept creeping out and that caused leaks that "stop and seal" only sorted for a short time, the proper fix was to buy a revised/corrected seal from Ford and get Auto Windscreens or some one like that to replace the seal.

The guy said as soon as he saw it that he would not be able to get rid of it all together. He said that he could improve it - which he has.Glassman wrote:Can you elaborate on what you're not happy about? There is still 'just' a mark where the chip was.
I don't think I'll bother doing anything and just live with it now, I think that doing anything else is just more trouble than it's worth.

Re: Windscreen Replacement
Thanks. I'd say your experience is probably the most common amongst the 'referred-to-a-nominated-repairer-insured-motorists' needing a windscreen repaired. I'm not saying it's right (or wrong for that matter - because I haven't seen it) but this is the trend. From this a perception is born; I'm of the opinion that the majority of motorists (who've had a chipped windscreen repaired) would be surprised to see how good a properly filled one can look (if they can find it first!). Perversely, the majority of guys/gals in charge of *attempting* to repair a chipped windscreen do not know how to achieve a good repair (not to be confused with the idea that they may well know how to achieve the best result with what they have).Wolfi wrote:The guy said as soon as he saw it that he would not be able to get rid of it all together.
