Polo Blue GT BSR remap review

Post by rsmagee »

So after a rather long weather induced delay (its bad in the North West!) here is my review of the BSR remap for the Polo Blue GT.
First a little back ground on the VAG cars I have owned:

1. Golf MK4 PD100 (still got it, no breakdowns after 230,000 miles)
2. Polo GTi 9n3 (Revo remapped)
3. Golf GTi Mk5 (Bluefin and then APR remapped)
4. Polo Blue GT 6C (DTUK box and now BSR remap)

So I have a fair bit of experience on VAG cars and particularly remapping as you can see!

Everything you need to know about the BSR remap can be summed up by my girlfriend’s reaction to the first time she was in the car post remap “WHAT have you done to your car this time.”
The mapping itself was very easy. Plugged the tool in and it scanned the car. It then said, correct map not found. However, using the PPC tool on my PC I uploaded my map and BSR sent back the compatible one the next morning. Worth noting it was sent back at 1000 on a Monday morning.

The flash itself took about 11 mins, at one point every warning light illuminated and there was lots of clicking! No idea what this was but a scan with my VCDS showed no error codes. Once flashed the car started normally.

On to driving. Basically the car now feels like my Mk5 GTi felt like at stock. The biggest change is buckets of low down torque delivered at about 2500rpm. The car pulls so hard; I can now really feel the benefit of the XDS system! Fuel efficiency is the same when driving sensibly, with 2-cylinder mode working perfectly. However, when I pushed hard I managed to hit an all new low of 18mpg!! Had great fun doing it mind.

Compared to the tuning box this is night and day. Firstly, the box drained my battery when the car was turned off and completely disabled the start stop system. This is obviously not the case with the remap. Secondly the box made the turbo work harder. It also stops the MPG calculation working properly and regularly threw over boost errors. Did I feel a difference with it fitted? Yes, but not a big one. The BSR remap transforms the cars feel.

The map feels very much like a Bluefin map, less aggressive than an APR or Revo (Revo was silly, throttle felt like a binary switch)
Overall I am thrilled with the map. Love being able to remove it for dealer appointments. BSR also promise to keep the map updated in the case of a new map coming from VW (i.e. to deal with emissions).

Please ask any questions you might have, will upload pics soon.

Would be tempted by something like this for my 6C GTI but as far as I am aware, even if you remove the map dealers will still be able to see that the ECU has been flashed?

I have heard this before, but I have never actually seen anyone heard of it being an issue in uk. I have never had a previous map detected either.

Oh well that's nice to know that you've not had issues, I guess they would only really look into it if there was a huge engine or gearbox bill

My thoughts exactly. I know the current golf R had a turbo issue and if you were mad enough to go to the dealer with software loaded they were refuse warranty on the turbo. (They can't invalidate the whole thing)

What's your mpg like now with this? Think I'm going to stick with my DTUk box as I can't sell it for love or money. Can't really afford to throw another £500 at the car at the moment but looks a good call tho.
