Sudden engine cut out on a bypass! not amusing

Post by pashtun48 »

hello all
Son reported his 04 plate 1.2 Polo cutting out combined with a large judder/engine stutter on Ripon bypass this afternoon...had to pull in and then car refused to start for aprox 2 mins, turned over didn't catch. Oil warning light came on for about 30 secs too.
Has been 'juddering' before but this was a worrying cut out- 109k on the clock.....has a persistent oil leak but has plenty of oil after a service a few weeks ago...
Any ideas please folks-thanks!

If the oil pressure warning was only coming on while he was cranking the non starting car, then that is okay, I think that the oil pressure warning switch status is blanked for start period during starting - in his case, the engine had not fired up so when the blanking was removed, the oil pressure was still too low as the engine was at cranking speed.

Any malfunction indicator light coming on?

Juddering sounds a bit like a COP (Coil On Plug) failure, but cutting out entirely???

Edit:- maybe try the search function here, on www.briskoda.net (Fabia)and www.seatcupra.net (Ibiza)

Hi,
Many thanks for the reply- I'm not sure as he can't recall and think was a bit freaked out by what was happening- 17 yr old new driver!
The local VW indie that it was serviced at said that the juddering maybe the coils, and to replace all three for certainty if that is the issue. Not sure about other warning lights appearing, it seems an intermittent fault but it has never cut out totally before, and he swears he didn't stall it
