Quick way is to try and rotate the driveshaft and feel if there is any significant play.
Better way is to remove the driveshaft and check for CV movement against the shaft

Been told no excessive play in drive shaft but there is play in the UJ, would this cause a bearing like noise? Also discs and pads are low.

Yes, that's it.
Technically the Polo has front driveshafts with two constant velocity joints per driveshaft.
UJ / universal joints are to my mind the the of joint fitted to propshafts on older front engine rear wheel drive cars (eg Ford Escort / Cortina)
There isn't anything to cause play in the driveshaft, except for wear in the splines that the CV joints slide onto, which I would not expect on the low power output of our Polo's. So yes, the wear in the CV joints (ball and cage construction) can cause the wear and sound you described.
They're not too expensive so I would replace, especially if the shaft has already been removed for inspection
