Android Auto (app-connect) not working with new phone (OnePlus 3T)

Hey

Hoping you folks can help me out. I just got a shiny new phone today for Christmas, OnePlus 3T, and tried it with my 2015 VM Polo 6C for Android Auto. Sadly it's just not wanting to work. When I try to plug the phone in the VM display shows "USB: Device is not supported". I've tried numerous things such as different cables, changing the USB connection on the phone (MTP does show a new message on the VW display - "USB : Error") but nothing is working It works fine with my older Xperia Z3 no problem still.

That got me thinking maybe the VW unit is out of date... It feels like it's can't properly (there does seem to be some communication happening, the android auto app does open whe I try to launch it manually on the MID). Below is the software page...

Had this same problem while trying to connect a OnePlus 3 to my car

The solution seemed to be to make sure everything was set up on the phone itself, then fiddle about with the unit in the car by going back to the VW system and then back in to Android Auto and suddenly it started working
