Android Auto (app-connect) not working with new phone (OnePlus 3T)

Hoping you folks can help me out. I just got a shiny new phone today for Christmas, OnePlus 3T, and tried it with my 2015 VM Polo 6C for Android Auto. Sadly it's just not wanting to work. When I try to plug the phone in the VM display shows "USB: Device is not supported". I've tried numerous things such as different cables, changing the USB connection on the phone (MTP does show a new message on the VW display - "USB : Error") but nothing is working
It works fine with my older Xperia Z3 no problem still.
That got me thinking maybe the VW unit is out of date... It feels like it's can't properly (there does seem to be some communication happening, the android auto app does open whe I try to launch it manually on the MID). Below is the software page...
