Started the car today , check coolant light came on, opened the bonnet , coolant tank empty and coolant all over the engine bay! Has any one had this??

It could be anything really, needs investigating and correcting before you next drive it or you could cause more damage.

I'm guessing a leak?

If you have coolant over the engine bay then the first thing to do is hose it off as it wrecks paintwork. Check the coolant filler cap is tight as this can leak under pressure when hot. Next check hoses for leaks - need to top up first and warm the engine to try to identify any joint leaks and then hose leaks. Garages put in a special dye to help identify where the leaks are. VW have had coolant pump leakage problems in the past and some garages suggest changing the pump when doing a timing belt change.

Ok so turns out the pipes behind the fan have worn through and spraying coolant all over the engine bay..



You can see we're is worn through on the photo and spary off coolant..

That's worrying... What were they rubbing on, and how many miles have you got on the car?

Have you informed the garage? Sounds like something's been left off the car in terms of hose management...

Nothing as my car still in my garage , part still hasn't came in yet , so as soon as it does there sending someone to my house to fix it [emoji106] busting to get driving it again , been 3 weeks now [emoji37]

So the Gti is now fixed , the new pipe that was put on is slightly different and sits back from the fans now so shouldn't split this time , it's a revised pipe so this issue doesn't occur again.. [emoji106][emoji106]

Cheers for that - implies this could be an issue for all early GTi's... I need to go and check mine...
