MASSIVE MISTAKE

Hi Guys,


Havnt had the best weekend, was involved in a car accident on Friday and yesterday I removed the battery from our 6C 2016 Polo GT to remove the bulb which actually didn't need to be removed due to the fact the headlight pops out....anyhow, after messing around and getting a tad frustrated I put the battery back in and *SPARK*, the terminals had been fitted the wrong way round.

Once I put it round the right way I started the car, now I have error warning codes,

No power steering, No parking sensors, No ETC, No stop start, and a warning light saying WARINING BATTERY NOT CHARGING STOP CAR NOW.

Checked fuses on battery for alternator and apparently they were fine according to the mechanic, its gone back to VW for further inspection. I guess because the battery isn't being charged it cuts out all assists to increase battery life.......I thought it would of popped some fuses and that's it, I would of checked to see if this battery is being charged and if not try putting a new battery on....maybe its a control unit that's blown up? surely every component that's electrical would have a fuse to safeguard something as silly as this....all I know is I have one angry mrs and I'm annoyed at myself as ive never done this before however always been wary as to what can happen i.e blown up ECU.



Any info on what it could possibly be would be good...

problem is that fuses are there for over current protection and still far to slow to protect electronics

i'm guessing you have partly killed the BCM so a new one of them might fix it but it could be a lot more than that.

I spoke to a mate who used to work at my local dealership and he did say they do normally out safeguarding in place for things like this.

The main thing is that the alternator isn’t charging the battery however the battery isn’t dead....something is stopping it from creating a currant that’s meant to be juicing up the battery.

All my electronics work I.e AC/Central locking/lights/wipers/ABS/mirrors/on board entertainment system so.....I’m trying to find a list of what the BCM controls specifically to the car that way we might get a idea..

Volkswagen have done some investigation, needs a new alternator & Fuse pack...don’t hold me to the last one the Mrs told me that

They keeping the car until that’s fixed then they said they might find something else wrong however I think they’re playing it safe.

I guess you're getting away lucky with no toasted ECUs and sensors, even though they should be protected against wrong polarities. Let's hope a new alternator will solve it.

I'm guessing that "fuse pack" just means that one or more fuses have blown and VW Group seem to use a "multi fuse" or "fuse pack" in place of maybe 5 discrete fuses, though I thought that most people just identify the failed fuse(s) and replace it/them with discrete same rating fuses, like was used in the past.

Yeah, I’m sure nothing else can be wrong with it once those items have been replaced, I was thinking it could have damaged the BCM like mentioned above after some digging but it seems like all those assists run off the battery & therefore without sufficient charging they cut those assist off. I hope this will be covered under the warrenty, as the service desk did say it should be but they will double check.

I guess so, they make it harder to change small components now and end up you having to replace the whole lot, all about money and ease when on the factory building stage.

I'm surprised that there will cover this repair FOC under the warranty as it was something that you did wrong that caused it, anyway, when I handed my wife's 2015 Polo in for investigation into "clunking" noises from the power train moving about, I had already said that I had discovered a torn lower arm rear mounting bush - and I reckon that could only have been caused by hitting too many potholes, they said it would get repaired FOC under the warranty, so maybe they just find that it is easier to do things that way.
By the way, that lower arm rear mounting bush has been in use with VW Group for about 20 years, so its design has been proven well enough.

So tonight we had great news! The polo is fixed and ready for collection, so I’ve picked it up and topped it up with VPOWER for her to surprise the Mrs.

All covered under warranty...the guys were great and I’m really happy with the branch. They did us a massive favor.
