indicator prob

Post by louise_gt »

yesterday my indicators started acting up
if i indicate left the lights stick on
if i indicate right they flash really fast (i have no bulbs out)
if i put my hazards on they all stick on and my p/s tail light flashes  everything was fine till about tea time

p.s if i give the steering wheel a good thud while indicating it seems to be ok for a couple of seconds

any ideas.

Knackered relay?
Or - a bit like mine but much more severe - a dodgy column indicator switch...
That or a loose wire/connector between the two - had similar symptoms when i swapped my instruments out and knocked a couple wires out of joint in the connector plug for the column switch. Dash light fixed on but exterior ones stuck off, all except for the hazards.

Not sure how to point you towards it being one or the other, but sounds more like the switch or the connector than the relay, what with the steering wheel bashyness. Pop the steering column shroud off (undo 3 screws & unclip carefully) and have a furtle about to see if anything can be pushed home more fully and solves it.

???

i will pull it apart once it gets lighter out, i think it could possibly be the wiring as the fog light switch also flashes when i indicate,

indicators flashing fast usually means a bulb has blown! sounds a bit like a dodgy earth or some dirty connections. this is a common fault on escorts! thats why you see escort lights doing crazy things, its due to a bad earth!

if i were u, check all the connections and the bulbs are clean and work, check earthing, and then go for a new relay!

If you open the bootlid, theres an earth wire or two (both brown) screwed bolted to the area around the metal panel that holds the light cluster on. Its the passenger side where these are too
