Hello all,
I've just joined the group - my wife currently drives a MK4 1.8T Golf which is feeling its age so we're looking for a new car for her - used for short journeys, ferrying kids around. I did think about the Polo GTI and the 1.4GT - both very nice, but now I have my sensible head on. I've concluded that the facelift (post 2014) Polo 1.2TSI SE is a good option, good fuel consumption and low tax, seems to have good performance and is not that much smaller than the MK4 golf.
I just wanted people's thoughts/views and any issuers with these cars that I should be wary of?
thanks for your time
Phil

Re: 1.2TSI - General advice
As long as it is the face lifted car then all should be okay, so far!
The 90ps gets a 5 speed box and the 110ps gets a 6 speed box, I’m probably biased, as my wife has a 110ps Polo SEL new in 2015, but if she is coming from a 1.8GTI, then the 110ps engine might suit her better??

Hi - I did think about that, but not many around - you think it's worth the extra 20BHP?
Wondering - can the 1.2TSI 90 be remapped to 110?

Sure you can retune the engine, but the gearbox will still be the same so maybe not ideal for the way the higher power happens.
I find the Polo in 110PS form to be flexible/powerful enough and capable of giving good economy figures, now and again I use my Audi S4 and it has at least 333PS but I can easily live with the 110PS the Polo has for usual running about with only 2 people in the car.
Edit:- as well as getting a 6 speed gearbox, the other thing that the 110PS version gets is bigger front brakes, 288mm ATE brakes instead of 256mm "Lucas" brakes - from my experience of having both, the small increase in disc size from 256mm up to 288mm makes a lot of difference - and no you can't retro fit the bigger discs unless you replace the hub carriers, and then you end up with a modified car and so insurance goes up.
