Help - New Sat Nav SD card not working

Post by Gee40 »

I've just bought an SD Nav card claiming to be an genuine VW card with 2018 Mapping from a retail outlook with 99.8% good feedback. The retailer suggests its the correct card (something backed up by a bit of research I did) but installing it hasn't been successful.

My car is a 2016 6c GTI with a single SD slot Discovery Media (Gen2) infotainment system . When I insert the SD card the display screen initially says "source contains valid navigation data" which is correct according to the manual. It then almost immediately says "source not supported" and the SD option behind the media button is greyed out. My car was 3 months old when I bought it and didn't have Sat Nav as an option, but I didn't need Sat Nav enough to pay the extortionate £550 quoted by VW. however at £30 for this SD card I thought it worth a punt.

Before I throw the card I the bin I thought I would seek fellow Polo owners advice. One thought I had was that I might need to get the system enabled by a VW dealer ( similar to the action needed to enable the anti hijacking auto door locking?)

Thanks in advance

I’m a little confused - you’ve said your infotainment unit is the Discover Media unit but you then say it didn’t have sat nav as an option, which suggests your car has the Composition Media (non Sat Nav) unit.

The standard Polo GTI infotainment unit is the Composition Media; this doesn’t have sat nav and is the one that’s fitted to the Polo GTI at the factory if the first owner didn’t pay for the upgraded Discover Media infotainment unit. Visually, you’ll know if you’ve got the Composition Media unit as it’ll have a ‘Nav’ button to the right hand side of the screen.

As far as I know, it’s not possible to add the VW Sat Nav maps to the Composition Media unit, although if your infotainment unit has App Connect (or is App Connect compatible), you can use an app such as Google Maps or Waze on your phone and display the maps on your infotainment unit screen.

Here’s the Composition Media unit;

And here’s the Discover Media unit with the ‘Nav’ button to the right of the screen;

Thanks for the reply. Makes sense to me . I don't have the Nav button and thought I had the Discovery Media Unit as that is the title on the front of the manual in the owners pack.
