Polo 6R Bosch ESP ABS coding lost - checklist ESP8.2i ESP9.0i - Calculate, VCDS

Post by iichel »

So welcome, happy corona holidays and let's get some stuff done.

You're probably looking here because you've lost your ABS coding for your Polo 6R. There is no universal coding to save them all, but you can have a try with this guide.
There are a number of reasons why your coding is lost, but these are the most common:
1) The battery went flat for a long time
2) You put an instrument cluster in the car that doesn't belong there.

In both cases, your ESP coding will become 00000000....0000

Before you as for someone to reconstruct your coding, have a look at this:
1) If you own a VCDS cable, have a look at your Logs folder (C:\Ross-Tech\VCDS\Logs) to see if your software has saved your old coding
2) If you own a VCDS cable, but 1 didn't help, have a look at the Advanced ID of modules 1 (Engine), 17 (immobiliser) and 19 (Instrument cluster). These must be identical.

In the case of the VINs in the Advanced ID's not matching, you must align these first. This is not something you can do with VCDS, but before this is done, the ABS will never accept any coding. This must be done with an immo tool.

If your Advanced ID's do match, you can try to reconstruct your coding.

Step 1:
If you have Bosch ESP8.2i, download this file.
If you have Bosch ESP9.0i, download this file.

Step 2:
Open the file with Excel or with Google Sheets.

Step 3:
Fill in your VIN in cell E2

Step 4:
Fill in all the correct bytes in the yellow cells. Do not touch the green cells.
So check cell E15, E24, E33, etc, for the correct values, if not, correct with your keyboard.

For byte 16 and 17, you must look in the column D and write 1 or 0 where appropriate.
You can enable the HHC (hill hold control), TPMS (tire pressure monitoring system)* and XDS electronic differential on any ESP unit.

Step 5:
The calculated coding will appear in cell E4. This coding is to be copied to the coding of your ESP unit.
Try this and see if the coding is rejected. If rejected, adjust the coding until it works or you give up (and then ask here).

Step 6:
You must do the basic settings of the ESP unit and steering angle sensor G85. The security access code is 40168.
Once everything is done correctly, all the warning lights will go off and your ESP will work perfectly.

* For TPMS, a button and coding in the instrument cluster is also needed.

I'll have a look at it later tonight. If you have a Polo 6C, it won't help you though since this is for the Polo 6R (ABS part number 6R0 xxx)

Some more info would be nice. Perhaps a VCDS scan?
