Using Carista with MFD/Trip Computer & Stalk Query

Post by Damon »

Hi,

I have a Polo Moda 60 which I have recently got as my first car so excuse my ignorance.
With what I believe is the Midline Cluster from my understanding, please see image of dash:
Image

I also bought a Carista adapter and currently running the 1 month free trial.
I mainly bought it to play around with the MFD, so when I initially connected it about 2 weeks back it said the MFD was disabled even though the display was showing fine in my car.

So I enabled it started to show the Fuel Range display in the top section, which was great as I’d much prefer to see this than the outside temp.

Later on again messing about I “disabled” the MFD through Carista hoping I could cycle through temp and fuel range, it just reverted back to temp.

I do not have the wiper stalk with the buttons unfortunately which I found out later through this forum, is kinda key to cycling displays etc.

Issue is now when I set the MFD to enabled on the app it does shown fuel range anymore. Seems like nothing on the MFD side of things changes, as even tried to change language to German for example and cluster region and none of those changes showed.

Checked to make sure the app wasn’t behaving funny changed some other settings such as enabling horn when locking and that enabled fine so the app is working and the connecting to the phone.
But anything related to instrument isn’t changing for some reason.

Contacted Carista they don’t seems to have a clue, I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled app still any changes made under the instrument section don’t seem to reflect on the car.

Bit stumped as to why, as it seemed to be working on the first use.
Any ideas am I missing something completely obvious here?

Also in regards to the wiper stall with the trip buttons how easy are they to install? If I was to buy a used part, as I’d love to have more control of what shown on the display.

Sorry for long winded post hope it’s clear.
Tex

Hi,
I have also played around a lot with Carista, its a great beginners tool for adding customization.

What radio do you have? I ask because some radios have a car setting option that lets you toggle instrument cluster gauges on and off, i have the composition color, that has the options for selecting which screens you want to see in the MFD.
have you tried pressing the button on the left next to the "0.0/Set"?
It might help pressing it very quickly to toggle the display, you can also try pressing it when the engine is off but ignition on. I know its for the service interval but its worth a try.
Also on Carista does it let you select and save the other instrument guages?
maybe try activating another gauge, it might also help deactivating the temp gauge in carista.

Hope that might help you.

With regards to the stalk, it is possible, just to change the one on the right hand side, however depending on your BCM you might have to change it if it doesnt support it, and potentially run wires to the BCM, and then you would have to do the coding in VCDS to recognize it.

I havent done the retrofit, but based on forums i have seen in the past that is the method.

Hi,

Thanks for getting back to me!

My radio is just the bog standard CD player not sure of the model part number but it’s not digital. So I don’t think it has that function.

Yeah I’ve tried to the 0.0/Set the first part where it shows temp just switches between that and what I believe to the next service countdown. But seemingly can’t get fuel range showing - baffling as I don’t understand how I got it last time.

And at the bottom part I can switch between miles and mini speedometer although it’s on kmph. I was reading on the internet changing cluster region to Australia changes it to MPH, but no luck. It’s like nothing related to the instrument changes anymore even when I press save on the app. As like I’ve said I’ve been tested by changing the language but it just stays English.

Within Carista for my model at least the instrument customisations are very basic.
It’s literally just Region, Language and enabling/disabling instrument.
Nothing more.
Although when I checked the website before purchasing the sample customisation list made it look quite extensive they mentioned options such as changing clock to 24hr/12h etc, but I don’t see any of those options when connecting to my 6R.

I’ve tried it when ignitions on and also when engines on now look, but ill have another play with it later.

I’ll have to look into retrofitting I was searching on this forum but there doesn’t seem to be a clear guide on how to do so. But I’ll have another search. Think that might be my only hope.

Thanks again though.

Hi,
The options available on carista are dependent on the components installed, If you dont have the options for enabling different cluster information such as speedometer, AVG speed, MPG, Fuel quantity etc, then i think even with a retrofit of the stalk you might not be able to access those features as its possible the instrument cluster doesn't support it, however, acknowledging that you did have a working fuel range active confuses me.

You can try disabling the MFD option in carista and saving that then You can try disconnecting your Neg terminal on your battery, and try turning lights or radio on to try drain any reserved power, then wait 10-15min then reattach the Neg terminal on your battery, going to Carista and re-enabling the Cluster information option/MFD and see if that works.

Please note that there may be a risk to the steps provided and take action on your own account and note i am not responsible for any faults or damage.

Let me know if that helps , otherwise you can still try the stalk retrofit and see if it helps.

Cheers mate!
I’ll try disable and disconnect the battery.

Funnily enough my battery was taken out and recharged the other day I think MFD was still enabled so will give it a shot.

I just don’t get how I got it appear before by simply “enabling” now I can’t get it to show at all. Very strange even the Carista help seem stumped, they suggested disconnecting the battery like you.

Dunno why I continued to play around instead of just leaving it, I wouldn’t have this

Even tried cycling through several regions and languages and seeing if I could bring it up no luck.

I think the Stalk is probably going to be the solution at this rate, I just hope they’re not difficult to install by yourself.

To make the instrument cluster show Fuel Range again, enable the MFD with Carista and drive the car untill it goes into fuel reserve.
That will make the cluster automatically show the fuel range.

Ah really?
That might make sense, as when I first enabled the petrol light was showing and it stayed 30 miles left. But it stayed on after refuelling with the new fuel range.

But I’ll see if it appears again once the light comes on again.
