Could anyone give me any ideas on how to remove my standard Sony tape head unit from my 97 Polo.

Is it a removalable face unit? Either way there should be 2 holes at the side of the face or behind where the faceplate fits.
You should have got some small plastic lugs with the car when you bought it. these lugs simply pop into the hole and then you pull when you hear them click into place.
If you haven't got the plastic keys you have 2 choices.
1) Go to you local ICE specialist and ask them if they can remove it with their keys (this WILL cost you, unless your buying something from them)
or
2) Fashion some replacement keys from a wire coathanger/metal wire

I've removed my head unit XR-3759 (6n Polo) and put in an iso connector so I can run speaker wire for 2 rear speakers. But after putting the head unit back in... whenever I clip the face back on... there is automatically power to the stereo.
Maybe this is more useful than needing to click the ignition one or 2 notches... but being scared of it running my battery flat, is there a way to make it so that it requires the ignition to be turned back to 1 or 2 notches before power goes to the stereo.
Or can anyone give me assurances that without the face, there is no wastage of electricity running to the stereo?

Maybe this is more useful than needing to click the ignition one or 2 notches... but being scared of it running my battery flat, is there a way to make it so that it requires the ignition to be turned back to 1 or 2 notches before power goes to the stereo.
Or can anyone give me assurances that without the face, there is no wastage of electricity running to the stereo?

Well Maybe - I don't want you chopping wires about yet....
Buy an adaptor and swap the wires on that...... They are normally set up to allow you to swap them

I've taken a look at it and looked at the wires. I think its purposely wired that way so I can switch on my car WITHOUT the key in the ignition. Might aswell keep it this way eh? It wont drain my battery if its switched off with the face in will it? (obviously I'll always take off the face, in which case is it completely safe from battery drainage?)bstardchild wrote: OK so does it have bullet connectors on the red and yellow wires?

Originally there are 2 yellow wires from the ISO connector, why is that?
But on the ISO connector I bought from Halfords, it has the 2 yellow wires leading from the stereo end but one of the yellow wires goes off to the red wire.
Would I simply snip this yellow wire if I wanted the stereo to have no power when the key is NOT in the ignition?
