Where to find radio code? (ft. battery getting changed)

Post by R826583 »

I’m getting my battery changed by a local shop in the next few days. I’m a little concerned that the stereo is going to lock upon the removal of the current battery. I hear that a ‘memory minder’ can be used which is a 9v battery/cigarette lighter gadget to prevent the stereo locking. Does anyone have experience with these? Also the shop says that it’s not required to code the new battery in because it is a similar type. Does this sound correct? Finally, does anyone know where I can find the stereo unlock code? I can’t find it anywhere in my log books/manual and VW (not my local shop) wants $100 AUD to give me the unlock code should I need it!

you don't need a radio code, that's all fine.
it is however necessary to get the new battery coded, so the car knows it has a fresh battery and will reset all the use counters it uses to monitor battery wear.

It does make sense because the manual didn’t refer to the locking of the stereo anywhere.

Re the coding I would like to get it done at the local shop. I’ll ask them if they can code it. If not, is it that bad if I don’t get it coded besides being a non-ideal? Can I even code it myself? I’ve heard of an OBD Elven but it seems very expensive for a one time use. Are the any cheaper OBD writers that are comparable?

Thanks for the help.

EDIT: the battery was changed 4 years ago with a roadside assist company and I’m 99% sure they wouldn’t have coded it. This hasn’t resulted in any issues, that I can tell at least :)

the car will, for the time being, probably over-charge the battery, which isn't really ideal for your new battery. it's not going to destroy it very rapidly. but it will shorten its lifespan.
