Horn works only with key in ignition? 2014 1.2TSI
Hi All,
The horn does not work (as I found out in a car park the other day when someone nearly reversed into us!) without the key in the ignition.
It works ok with the ignition on and car running.
I took the 20A fuse out (F7) and tested again.
I can hear a relay (or switch) click when the key is in the ignition and turn but does no noise when the key is out?
Does anyone have an idea of the fix?
The MoT is due next week!
Thanks in advance for any suggestions or info!
Mark

Don't think you can honk the horn without it being on. Computers and all that. But then I'm talking from a 6C point of view where there's even a delay between pressing the horn button and the actually horn going off while driving. Nanny computer says "wait".

i think it's normal behaviour for the polo 6r. horn only works with ignition on. on the 6c i think you can change the coding/adaptation in the bcm, like on many mqb cars.

That is the way things have been with every car I've owned since 1976, Fords, Vauxhalls, Audis, VWs and SEATs.
Edit:- what marques of cars have you owned that have the horn enabled at all times?

i can code it to be on all the time on my mqb passat. which is a huge PITA when you're working on the steering wheel and something goes wrong

Thanks for all the replies - much appreciated!
Surprised that modern cars can't sound the horn with the ignition off? I suppose I don't sit in my car much these days without the engine running to have noticed!
Pretty sure most Italian cars in 80s and 90s were able to sound the horn without key in ACC position or engine on; I remember the cigarette lighter working too on my FIAT Uno when most English and German cars from the same era need the ignition on or in ACC position.
Couldn't find anything definitive re: MoT test but a fair few forums mention as long as the horn works it is not a fail.
Thanks again,
Mark

I actually can't remember if my mk1 golf needs the key to be on to use the horn. That car is carbs and distributor so I wonder if old style electrics were different/simpler when it comes to the horn.
I need a new battery for it though to confirm.

In my Polo6R horn works only with ignition ON. In my T-roc, horn works at any ignition.
I prefer the way it horns in my 6R.. may be it's just me. Just to give an example, I have lost count of occasions when I accidentally pressed the horn in my T-roc. Be it while cleaning the steering wheel, or while doing some DIY stuff around the wheel. My kids think papa has gone mad.. honks at nobody.

If i remember there is a coding option in bcm to enable it.patil wrote: Thu May 30, 2024 4:04 pm In my Polo6R horn works only with ignition ON. In my T-roc, horn works at any ignition.

You mean in Polo? Rather I would search in BCM adaptations of T-roc to disable horn on terminal 30.amer6R wrote: Thu May 30, 2024 4:35 pmIf i remember there is a coding option in bcm to enable it.patil wrote: Thu May 30, 2024 4:04 pm In my Polo6R horn works only with ignition ON. There is a channel for that in your mqb bcm
