ADSL Netwoking Help.

Post by wul3er »

Can someone help me set up a network please.

My mate went and got himself a wireless Router with built in adsl modem, It plugs into the Ethernet and is on Band G.

He is wanting to plug the Router into his his home Pc which has Tesco Broadband on it. And then he has a Card thing that goes into the laptop which he is wanting to use the Tesco Broadband on.

I have tried installing this on both my PC and his home Pc but have had no success.

I completed step 1 of the process which is Plug in all the cable into the correct places. The Step 2 Is as follows.
"In step 2, you will configure your Linksys Wireless-G ADSL Gateway to be able to gain access to the Internet through your internet service provider (ISP) You will need the setup information provided by your ISP, if you do not have this information please contact them before proceeding."

So ok we have that.

Then:

"Open your web browser (you may get an error message at thid point. Continue folling these directions) Enter http://192.168.1.1 in the web browsers address feild. Press The enter key. "

So when we are try this nothing at all is happening. I have tried doing this with and without the Work Offline ticked.

Can someone please help me get by this stage as i Think i might be able to get the rest setup after this part.

Thanks for the website, The site was basically just telling me the same as the manual that came with the equipment.

When we set it up the Internet light is red and all the other lights that are supposed to be lit are Green. i think that this light is red because we havent set it up with the internet setting as yet.

When i click on the internet explorer it just has the egg timer sign which stays there for ever. A few times it has asked me if i would like to connect or work offline, i have tried clicking both but again the egg timer comes up and then nothing else happens after that.

on internet explorer click tools...internet options...connections..lan settings..make sure the only thing ticked is the automatically detect setting box. *i use windows 2000*

as it seems like its a problem with the configuration of your pc rather than the router.

I'm with Tesco broadband - got connected last Monday after having signed up on the 16th of October! I've got a Belkin all-in-one router/modem jobbie much like you Linksys kit, it has a setup wizard that guides you through the process of connecting to th'internet.

Tesco set your username and password, you'll obviously need those. They assign an IP address and DNS settings automatically, and you'll want to be using PPPoA, VPI/VCI is 0/38 and encapsulation is LLC as far as I know. Thats what I have set up.

Finally, when we got the green light from Tesco a few weeks a go, we couldn't connect to the Internet, despite having a solid ADSL light. We reported this to them and they had to "fix a fault on the line". Unfortunately its 50p/minute to call them and tell them this... but they sorted it out and now we're online in my house and it all works great. If you have got their "broadband starter kit" you'l have a cheap-o speedtouch adsl usb modem, this will run a connection routine that can identlfy possible line errors which Tesco can interpret and rectify. In our case, it wasn't until we told them the error message on the cheap modem that they sorted out the line!

Finally finally, check Internet Explorer's Internet Options, and choose the connection tab. Click LAN settings and I think you'll need to have all these blank, including "automatically detect settings", for IE to sort itself out OK. Again, thats how its set up here. Then, once its all working, get Mozilla Firefox 1.0

Hope I'm helping! Good luck mate.

OK, I think we have the Settings from Tesco but unfortunatly Its my mate who has tesco BB and we are my house using Onetel BB.

I am trying to set this up for him as he has little knowledge of computers and i have a little more, lol.

I'll try the Unticking the Automaticlly Detect Settings.

Why isnt it let me get to the address 192.168.1.1 ?

What is Mozilla Firefox ?

Firefox is simply an alternative web browser, something different to Internet Explorer.

But anyway. You should be able to access the router's web-based interface via 192.168.1.1 whether or not you are online, it should be visible no matter. Check all cables and connections between PC and router - router should have a link light for the wireless network, or at least mine does, to show its enabled and available.

Go to Start - Settings - Network Connections under XP and you will get a list of your network connections - anything listed there, eg. Wireless Netowrk Connection? If so, right click, choose properties, choose "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" and click Properties - it should be set to "obtain an IP address automatically", which the router will provide. If you are set to a different IP address, eg. 172.19.2.14, then you won't be able to communicate with the router on 192.168.1.1. These first three segments must be the same for you to "talk" to the router! For instance, my Belkin box is 192.168.2.1, mine and my Dad's PCs are assigned addresses by the Belkin via DHCP, so my PC for example is 192.168.2.4.

Had another thought. System tray - bottom right of the screen next to the clock - you might have an icon that looks like a little computer connected to a red cross (if the connection isn't connected) - hover the mouse over this if it is there and the tooltip will say something like "wireless network unavailable" - you should be able to right-click and choose "see available networks"?

We have the the Link light on.

I have tried going to That web address from my Pc here which is connected to Onetel BB and it comes up Web Site Unavailable.

In Network Settings we dont have Wireless Network Settings But we do have LAN. This is what i thought i was supposed to be using.

Hmmm.

The Linksys "tech helper"website Metz provded a link to goes through to the configuration page, which, if you scroll down, shows a link called "I can't access the Internet" - click there and you can get some more pointers to try and resolve the issue.

"Check your Router's WAN Link LED for a solid green light on its front panel. If the WAN Link LED is not lit up, click here for directions." - didn't you say that was red?

Try pinging the router - Start -> Run -> "cmd" and type ping 192.168.1.1 and it should reply. Example from my PC to my router:

Image

If you can ping successfully and you get replies from the router, its a setup problem. If you get no replies, ie. "request timed out" four times over instead of "reply from...", then its a hardware issue, such as dodgy cable, or the pc and router aren't on the same IP address range?

i can't think of much else I'm afraid! You could call Linksys tech support I suppose, though that'll have to be tomorrow now...
