If your wheel bearing has gone then it probably is that you can hear.

Get it changed then see if it's still there 8)

if you've just worked on the brakes i'd take the wheel off and check nothing is touching...if you spin the wheel whilst its jacked up you should be able to hear where it's eminating from

COULD YOU PLEASE TURN CAPS OFF! :D

As for your problem, yeah I'd side with ModifiedMadness and say its the bearing, which you say you already know is knackered.

Off topic, is there a box Si that you can put what you drive in? I looked on the profile page but couldn't find one.

You know the wheel bearing is gone and you're asking if that could be the cause of the noise? Most likely, yes. That's what happens when a wheel bearing goes. It makes a noise, it makes some more noise, then the wheel falls off.

Nah, no box. You just type it after the Location and it should display like mine. My Location reads "Shrewsbury Drives: Polo GTi"

the grinding noise will be the bearing, the knocking noise may be something else such as a shock abosrber bush, get it investigated!

Is the knocking simply cuased by the coilies and the amount the car has been lowered? I remember dubpolo mentioning something about this, getting a knocking noise sometimes. He reckoned there wasn't a fix for it apart from maybe adjusting the ride height? I'll do a bit of searching later (when I'm not at work) and find out :)
