You don't neet it, but...

In Australia it's divided into two parts: Your registration (which covers third party compulsary insurance) and your own vehicle insurance.

Basically, with your rego you get coverage if you hit somebody's car or something to a certain amount. This is compulsory and without it the appropriate sticker on your car your rego is invalid and you'll be asked to return your license plates. On my Polo, this costs me roughly 180 pounds (450 OZ) per year.

On top of that goes part two, your insurance for me and my vehicle. And that is not compulsory. But I guess it is worth having, paid off for me anyway... (read on if interested in how I got my new polo)

This is the basic gist on insurance down here, as I understand it....

Cheers,
Chris

Last december my g/f's dad had my old polo (1998 6n 60'000km) for the day. He drove it out of the driveway, couldn't turn on the a/c or wind down the windows... So he got out, locked it and went back inside. By the time he got there his wife was telling him about smoke in the driveway and my car was on fire.
The insurance had a full investigation done on it and after two months the report came back saying that it was and incorrectly assembled intake valve -> product fault. Fire was contained to the engine bay and surrounding panels.
They contacted VW for me and said to contact me in a week or they would repair the car and take VW to court. Needless to say, VW was very friendly to me after that. In the end they traded in my old burnt one, and gave me a brand spanking new Polo S (10'000 pounds here) for 1400 pounds.
The insurance insisted on the thourough fire investigation and in the end it got me a new car for a reaonable ;-) price. It took a while to come through, but in the end I believe it was worth it.

Polo is 1.2S (65b).

They were good for my Passat too, that's only £320 for '98 1.9 TDi Sport Estate

You will all really love this!
My wife paid £178.33 for her 03 Polo 1.4tdi SE with e sure. Excess of £100, including me as additional driver, legal protection and protected NCB.
Reason? - We're both 60+ and have been driving for 40 years with no claims.
Old age does have some advantages (but not many!)
