If you don't fancy cutting the dashboard up to fit the speakers, I've got some very nice 8.5cm JBL's that slot straight into the polo holes... they're just sitting in my cupboard awaiting a buyer :D They'll go about as loud as you can stand and have a surprising amount of bass (and excess-bass handling ability) for such small units - they dance all over the standard VW speakers graves!
(tell a lie, you do have to break one small plastic tab on the underside of the grille so they'll still clip down, but that's all)
Thanks for the offer! I would of taken you up, but I've already fitted the speakers!

I didn't trust myself with the dremel so close to the glass, so I did it with a few knifes... The orginal grille's fitted back on as well, once I'd snapped and sanded alot of the plastic away! ;)

Comming from a sound/audio background, I'm well aware that whatever I do the sound is going to be a bit pants! But ignoring that ;) the mid-top is handled quite well by the el-cheapo sony speakers, but would be nice just to have a little more bottom end. Any recomendations? Its got the little speaker mounts at the rear, and the parcel shelf with some mdf bracing might be a possiblity? Don't really want to disable the boot as I acccually use it! I've got a 15" bass driver knocking around here, but I think it would be a bit to much, not to mention it weighs a ton!

I'm thinking of replacing/upgrading the VDU in the Polo....

I've read several of the posts on here and it look very do-able...

At the moment, I literally just have Speed, Oil Temp and a fuel gauge... how difficult would it be to scrap that VDU and replace it with somthing abit more comprehensive? Would be quite nice to have a rev counter, and a clock would be ultra kewl! :D

Tempted to try and pick up a glove box jobber as well, and covert the hole into a glovebox.

Any thoughts, hints, etc...

Hope all is kewl for all your people like. LG

Dunno ... don't think I've ever personally seen someone do a full dashpod conversion - i think the consensus would be its just not worth the effort. If you think you're good for it, then by all means give it a crack :)

Mostly it comes down to getting the best stock clocks available for the car (genesis, GT or G40 ones), and/or making custom dial faces (or having them made) to improve the look a bit.

the sound can at least be made "acceptable". I think my own route of having half-decent car speakers (pretty much the best you can get in 8.5cm without spending mega money, i reckon) up front with a home audio sourced setup under the parcel shelf would have worked wonders.... IF I'd got an amp on board to drive the rears properly (needs more power for good effect anyway, particularly the woofer cones, and to top it off they were 8 ohm instead of 4...)

Fair enough, I'll go on a mission for a new clock! and photoshop up some dials. Anyone good for parts, or should I go on a scrapy mish/ebay.

The car looks 10 times better just after a good wax, if I get a chance later this week I'll wax and clean it again!

Is there supposed to be a big empty space in the center column? Looks like its missing somthing! Having said that, it does mean you can get the passenger to do the clutch and gears!

Thanks for the advice again - LG
