Main Beam Bulb

Post by D-Dub »

I bought some Phillips blue vision bulbs. A pair of H1's and some W5W's. Now the W5W's are the sidelights and i thought the H1 bulbs were to replace the ones that you use for main beam. But the guy at the garage said they were the same as the Xenon bulbs :? Confused

Philips blue vision are xenon filled bulbs with a blue tint, that makes them look like Xenon HID - thats why he said it. The H7 is the dipped beams, but in the GTI, they are Xenon HID as standard :P :P

Xenon bulbs are available in H1, H4 and H7. Ive got dipped and main beam in mine with xenon bulbs, and the difference is amazing!

I'm pretty certain that the main-beam bulb is an H1 fitment. I've got here a pair of W5W Philips BlueVision bulbs to go in as sidelight bulbs and a pair of H1 Philips VisionPlus which will be replacing my standard-fit main-beam bulbs :) just haven't gotten around to getting it sorted yet!

Cheers

Hehe I was wondering if you had fitted those bluevision sidelights yet :P

Main beam is def an H1 fitment - to confirm it :)

Well, in mine it was easy - im not sure as for the GTI due to less space in the engine, but I shouldn't think its much different.

You take off the black plastic case on the back of the headlight, then just unclip the bulb (its the one above the sidelights :P) Theres like a metal wire clip that holds the bulbs in place - you can see it if you look into the headlamp unit on the back. Just unclip that, and put the new one in.

Remember though NOT to touch the bulb glass on the new bulbs - it can limit their life by up to 70%!

Also, if you havent fitted them already, the old sidelight bulbs just pull out - a little force might be needed but they will come out :P Best to pull on the black holder for the bulbs :)

Cheers,

Alex

As said the dipped beam is H1, on Gti its the Xenons.

On non-Gtis the main/high beam is H7, isnt it the same on the Gtis?

Just to clarify im talking about changing the bulb above the sidelight bulb, the one used for high beam. Not the xenon bulb. That black plastic cover just pull off?

Heh heh heh, sometimes I wish I was a non GTi owner, ignorance is bliss.

I was initially puzzled when I tried changing my sidelight bulb on my Gti.

The GTi's need to have the front bumper removed to change the bulbs. There's a step by step in the DIY section.

I have a sidelight out and an MOT in April, so my bumber will be coming off at somepoint soon for a bulb change. :o
