GTI or 130 diesel?

Post by carmadaaron »

Right peeps,

im looking at moving onto something with a bigger engine. Around the £12k mark, the 06 GTIs are in range, but so are PDTDI 130 diesels.

Hence the poll.

So tell me what you think its better, and why! :P

Diesel Will save you more in the long run and also tuned up could be close to the GTi in speed.

However the GTI engine can be tuned a whole lot depending how much you want to spend. Granted that can also be said for the diesel.

Diesel will be good if you're going to be doing high mileage and long journey's a lot.

Thought you weren't keen on "Tractors"?

Lol ... time moves on Simon

Its just the performance is rather staggering for the 130, well i think anyway, 'cos the PD 160 Ibiza does 0-60 in like 7.6secs, which is quicker than the Polo GTI... so thinking of a 130 Polo then chipping it to ~200.

You know the 130 makes sense! There's very little difference in the performance of the 2 cars and much more mid-range in the diesel. Plus think of the fuel and insurance savings. Go diesel! Give me a shout if you want a ride anytime to make up your mind! 8)

Oh and the 6 speed box is a much sweeter shift than the 5 speed!

- Both are very tuneable
- The Diesel will get you better performance for fuel economy and will have a better mid range
- The GTI looks much better and has the nice silver dash, although the diesel you can customise its looks or keep it a sleeper

Nothing sounds nicer than a nice Petrol engine IMO.

Go with the GTi 8)

GTI the whole way.

Before I got my R32, I had a Fabia vRS. The pd130 feels quick in isolation - and is very punchy through the gears - but it is not a performance engine - and never feels like one.

The Polo GTI is also noticeably, usefully quicker.

Oh, and one other thing - I was lucky to average 40 mpg with the vRS. Driving the same way (hard, but letting the engine warm up properly etc) I am getting an overall average of 32mpg from my 1.8T :D

IMO there really isn't enough to justify the GT over the real thing.

An overall average of nearly 23 mpg :D

Although a spirited run wouldn't see more than 17 - 18

A long motorway journey would see 28 ish and a really careful drive at 60 mph on A roads could (could) see 30 mpg.

I never ever saw any better than that. But - it is notoriously thirsty for a 3.2 6cyl engine. M3 drivers regularly see 33 - 35 mpg on motorway runs, and I have friends with S4's that average the same as my R32 did!!

Thanks, only reason i ask is that an R32 will be my next car in 2 yrs 8) Although an M3 is tempting....

Just wondering, how long you had the current 1.2 for?
