I thought yours was new?

I don't expect to service mine till the 17k miles mark.

I'm assuming everyone's is on variable servicing?

depends on what your car came out with either

time and distance, or the interval one, where it comes up on your display

to be honest, you should service your gti every 10k to keep the engine tip-top!

i change oil every 5k to be on the safe side!

I know, I think every 10 - 12 K is good, if you use good oil. Think am going to get it done by someone i know, then I know its done properly and know its good oil thats been used.

Nah, VW wouldn't put it out on long life servicing if the car couldn't take it.

I've done 10k since January, all sorts of driving, and a track day, and it hasn't used a drop of oil :D

I've no worries about it at all.

Slightly off topic, but does anyone know how it is that you get the car to tell you when it thinks the service is due? I've seen people mention it, but can't find the info!

Ross you need to check your handbook for the chassis no and ring your local vw to let them tell you wether they set your car up on time and distance or longlife!!
mine was on longlife when it first came out (21k miles) but when i first changed oil at 7k the used oil was so thin!
i change every 5k now or so... on healthy good decent oil!

costco rocks! castrol edge 10w/40 for 16quid! woop woop!

0h dear, your gti should run on 0w30 fully synthetic weather it be longlife or not

the oil your using is much too thick and may not be providing adequate lubrication or protection

so in effect you could be doing more damage than good

all the 1.8t engines even from as early as the launch in the a4 in 1997 have used such a thin f/s based oil for its extra quick and easy heating properties for the engines long term protection

if i were you kc, id be considering changing back asap
