gear box problem (diagnosis now in)

was driving the car today and all of a sudden it started making funny noises like a loud whinning it feels like the gear box, the noise isnt there when you put your foot down but when you lift off it makes and aweful whinning noise like something is turning round and scraping on something else!

as i said it feels like its the gearbox as i cant feel it through the gear stick and not the steering wheel

could any body shed some light on this for me im really stuck here!!

drove it again tonight and the gears seem to clunk in when you change could this be the clutch???

Nah, gear box mate....i got the same whyning and eventually the gears stared playing up.....Dont drive it!!!! Because it'll be bearing and you'll eventually star knocking teeth off, losing gears and ultimately blowind a hole in the diff :shock: Thats what happened to me! It wasnt a long process either.....matter of a couple o days!

what did you do about it???

and what was the actual problem diagnosed as??

its a new clucth and new gearbox for me :( at vast expense!!

How mechanically minded are you? Rebuilding the box is quite easy really. I have a list of all part numbers required, costs around £130 for the lot.

That would be ideal. My mate is a mechanic so he would maybe do mine in spare time.

I have a GTI, so i might rebuild a spare GTI box then swap them over.

VW part numbers to the left, timkin in brackets. I found they were cheaper from the dealer than a bearing supplier. Ideally the plastic bearing could be taken to a bearing specialist and matched to a metal one, this may rectify one of the problems.

085 311 431 C x1 (Crappy plastic bearing) 5th Gear Idler Bearing - £4.85
085 311 113 x1 Seal - £5.20
084 409 189 C x1 Diff Seal - £9.45
084 409 189 B x1 Diff Seal - £9.45
085 301 215 A x1 End Plate Gasket - £6.69
085 311 582 x1 Crappy Clip Thats Bound to Break, holds in selectors.

Stani, yours is a 1.4 8v isnt it??

I have a spare 1.4 8v engine and box :D

box was refurbed less than 15k ago at a cost of over 400 fitted.....and i got the fitting for 35 quid cos it was a mate :P

already had it all fixed just couldnt do without the car!

Stani how much did it cost ya and what route did you go down? E.g reconditioned box or one from the scrappies?

i got a new gearbox, i didn wanna risk it happening again soon! mine was beyond reconditioning! and i needed a new clutch anyway so got that done at the same time cost me £750 :shock: :(

re-conditioning is definitely the way to go, before its beyond repair!!!
