Door handle and central locking problems, any ideas?

Post by xbaboon »

I apologise in advance for my shocking lack of knowledge and terminology :)

I think I know the problem with the door handle, as it's happened before. When I pull on the driver's side handle, it just pulls all the way out until it stops, and doesn't trigger the latch. The last time it happened I watched as it was repaired and it seemed like there was a thin, metal prong which snapped at the top where it should press against the handle internals as it opened. Is it common, and is it feasible that I could repair it?

Also, my central locking has decided to play silly buggers. Unlocking is fine, but when locking the motor (I assume, pump maybe) which I can hear near petrol cap stays on. From reading about it seems that it could be a problem with the pump, and someone else has suggested to me that it may be the solenoid for the petrol cap lock, as they can get worn(?). Again, any ideas or fixes would be greatly appreciated :)

the door handle just whip it off and see whats broke,

its a T10 bolt on side of the door then the handle slips forwards and pulls out becarefull of the prong that fits into the lock mech.

the central locking sounds like its not the pump as it still works ( it just contiunes running) it sounds like there is a leak somewhere.

does any one of the locks play up or is it all,.

when its running can you hear any air rushing,

i havent got phnumatic CL like in standard polos so i cant give you and exact location to check. but look at where the pump is and check the pipes that connect to it. they will most likley join to a T piece.

All of the locks (ie petrol cap cover, drivers door, passenger door, boot) lock when the key is turned, but the motor noise just continues. I can't hear any air rushing, but to be honest O wouldn't know where to listen. All I know is the noise of the motor/pump is coming from around the petrol cap area, is that where the pump is? (told you I was clueless :)).

I had this on my Polo

First thought that it was the pump that was damaged, since it would make that vaccum noise. Got a friend's pump to test it and it made the same noise, even if it did close all the locks.

What happens is that one of the pipes of the central locking has a small hole, so when you lock or unlock the pump continues working because there is air coming throught that small hole. At each door you have the pipe, you have to check one by one to see which one needs to be repaired, superglue will get the job done!

If you continue with the pump like this it will eventually break, since its working beyond capacity, so to say.

Thanks, I'll have a look later. I don't know if it matters, but I don't get the problem with unlocking. When I unlock the car it works normally.

Easiest way to do it (i saw my electrician do it like that) is at the C pillar of the car (behind the seat bealts) you have the connections of the pipes in a T, take it off and blow some air into it. If it locks the door its fine, if you feel like the air is getting out somewhere, that's your culprit!

Breath in - locks
Breath out - unlocks (almost sounds as wax in wax off!)
