My 1st Polo

Post by Avinitlarge »

Hi
Just bought a P reg Polo, 1.4 16V. Its Possible the worse thing Ive ever done to be honest.

Good points
it has 4 doors

Bad Points
Rust across the top of the windscreen
Think the windscreen is letting water in
Drivers side electic window doesnt work
Loads of travel in the brake pedal
Blowing water out of the expansion tank
Heater doesnt blow warm, Never mind hot

Any suggestions??

I know Andy "puddin" Coggan, The owner of motors in motion, Parts are not a problem,But Its it actually worth repairing??

After looking at the common faults, Its makes me glad Ive got my Pajero, It wont go wrong

Its probably that the:
Think the windscreen is letting water in
Heater doesnt blow warm, Never mind hot
Blowing water out of the expansion tank
Are all related. Ur Heater Matrix sounds like its gone and if theres water in ur car its coming from there. Im just assuming here as there is limited info on problems.

The Electric window is just a common fault and you could probably go to a scrappers and pick up the new mechanism for £35-40

As for the Rust just take to body shop and get them to sort it :)

And ur Brakes i dunno, is it leaking brake fluid, brake pipes corroded? I dunno im no expert just assuming hehe

Hope you get ur polo sorted m8 it is a fun car to drive when its working properly =D

I really dont mean to sound sarcastic but... if you knew it had these problems... why did you buy it? If you didnt give the car a thorough going over first then you only really have yourself to blame. :?

Though id say its worth fixing. Once you own a polo you dont go back. Theyre s**t hot, and i onyl have an 8v... and now im going to stop typing begfore i cry at the realisation that i have no MOT....

Bought it from Flee bay, From the description it sounded ok, They said the expansion tank was cracked, Thats why it was loosing water. I had someone collect it so never saw the car until it got to me. The car isnt actually mine, Its my other halves, She was insistant the she wanted it.

When read this I thought how comes :? :?: cos 16v's are some pretty sweet toys for what they are.

Guess your problems are from not viewing the car before purchase, especially from fleebay! So you've bought a lemon but get it checked out by a garage if you can't see where the waters leaking from. The windows however are a common problem and mechanisms can be found at scrappies.

I actually work at a BMW garage, One of the mechanics said it could be a number of things, But I personally think its the head gasket

Well, A little news, Decided to have a look at it before setting it on fire

Drivers side electric window doesnt work - The wiring between the A pillar and door has broken

Loads of travel in the brake pedal - Wheel bearing collasped

Blowing water out of the expansion tank
Heater doesnt blow warm, Never mind hot - Water pump and thermostat knackered

It doesnt need rebuilding, Just a water pump and thermostat

Done a little more work on it, Fitted a toad alarm, Quad lights, Green indicators and badgeless grille. Repaired the glove box whilst it was out, Also repaired the rear wiper motor. Its slowly getting there, Just need to get it down to work and and replace the wing then into the body shop, Having the bumpers, Roof, Mirrors, headlight surrounds and wing painted

looking good so far. Think you need to get Silvertec indicator bulbs to get rid of the horrible orange and tint them a few layers of black. Then they'd look the same colour as the car I reckon.

The bulbs are clear, The indicator has a clear diffuser in it. I will give the tinting a go though, Ive still got a tin left from the last set of lights I did

Yay, Its finally on the road. Just need to adjust the headlights. Took it out tonight, It seems reasonable nippy. Im not sure if the engine is goosed though, I gave it a good thrashing, There was quite a bit of smoke, Might be because it has been stood for a couple of months though, I hope it isnt the rings
