My wheel came off at 50mph...

Post by 3LL1077 »

Well. I gained a generic knocking noise in my car the other day. And yesterday on my way to Liecester to meet Haris to clean our cars ready for the DubClique meet and a professional photoshoot afterwards.

The knocking got worse and worse. Steering wheel got REALLY shaky. I was panicing and rang Alex P when i left the A1 going onto the A47 and he said it might be my uspension (I had recently fitted my strut brace).

So i thought right well i'll look at it when i get to Haris's house as its not that far away. Then about 5 to 10 minutes later the shaking got supidly bad. I then put my hazzards on. 2 seconds later i heard a huge clunk and plumes of smoke out of my rear view mirror. I let the car drift to a stop as i wasnt swerving thankfully!

I ended up stuck on the A47 on a busy Sunday! Two guys tried helping my move it but it wouldnt budge. The guy said my suspension must have collapsed! So i opened my bonnet and everything was fine. So i then thought that it might have came lose at the bottom near the hub.

I was then mortified when the RAC guy tried taking my wheel off............................

It turns out 3 of the 4 wheel bolts holding my wheel on had slowly worked their way off hence the wheel buckling under the weight.

It turns out i need a new rim, as the holes where the bolts go through have ovaled out and a new tyre at least. The car went into the garage this afternoon and ill know the damage if any tomorrow when i ring them up.

Heres some pics

The skid mark left by my tyre right in the distance.....

And where i ended up

The damage (not the best shots, will get some more when the wheel is off. It took a shard out of my wheel and it wedged onto the caliper :( )

All i can say is meh :(

Ah dude that's a real shame. how the damage isn't that bad.

Was it a case of bolts not being tight enough then?

Feel for ya, good job it wasn't at higher speeds on the motorway. The damage could've been worse for you & the car! :?
Lets hope it isn't too hard on the wallet.

I was pretty scared at first, I thought you were going to say the suspension had collapsed. which would make me extremely paranoid about mine!

Christ mate!

Glad to hear you came out ok though as it could of been a heck worse if it had been out of control. Must check my bolts, can't risk it lol.

must admit i was expecting to see pics of worse damage then that like the splitter ripped of and some damage to the corner of the bumper.

even on the back of a tow truck ur car still looks nice..... better clean tho  (not sure about the face pic i did there tho)

o as it happens im getting a knocking noise on my car, it isnt getting any worse tho so im thinking it might be something to do with the coilies or upper mounts or something but i dont think its gonna be loose bolts on mine tho.
