air filter?

hi im after a filter to go in the original airbox i would like to hear peoples views on the various options and what gains there are

do you get any more induction noise from a panel filter?

i would like to sort my gti's breathing out this next week so that i can get ready for a remap with j :-)

there is no right and wrong or best answer to this....

cheapest way to improve things is to modify the bottom of the air box... drilling 2" holes on the underside, etc... airflow is improved no end..

next put K&N panel filter in air box... but you still need to modify the airbox of fit larger airbox pipe from pd160.. to help it work better..

or remove airbox and replace with a cone filter..

or remove airbox and replace with a full blow induction kit (cone filter and cold air feed)

I see it like this... Value for money... do the first option and spend all the money you saved on a forge turbo intake pipe..the bit that goes from the MAF to the turbo ;-)

OR..

Just get stage 1 remap first (its not dependant on any mods).. then over time you do intake mods then exhaust mods.. then you get stage 2 map....

and so on...

J, why do you recommend the forge turbo intake pipe over the standard one?

Rich... its just so much fatter than the original...

the whoel intake is pretty bad on the 1.8T..

1... fairly narrow pipe from grill to airbiox..

2. airbox full of baffles and THICK paper filter...

3. pretty narrow double screened MAF...

4. Crazily thin metal pipe just before turbo..

5. turbo connection also quite small...

lots and lots of restrictions....

so.. drill the airbox, fit a k&N panel, fit a forge intake pipe - and you make a reasonable difference to air flow...

descreening the MAF is possible but then the sensor does not measure air as accurately - so best not to do...

right then so if i get the panel air filter and then drill the airbox on the underside? anyone got any pics of this and how should i get the baffles out of the airbox just sand or is there a quicker way?

anyone know the part number for the k&n filter?

The K&N panel filter part number is 33-2830, also fits Skoda VRS, Seat Ibiza and a few Polo models.

I still have the baffles... but a dremmel will soon fix that..

What some of the old TT boys did was just cut a huge chunk out of the bottom of the airbox... they came to the conclusion that doing this made the standard paper filter work much better.. no need for a K&N !!!!

if u were to drill the air box and fit say a forge 007p , would u be able to hear it liek u could if u had a cone filter?

i have de-restricted my maf and it runs fine?? Also my cone filter with air feed works a treat and sounds great!!

The MAF and airbox are flow tested so accurate MAPS of voltage v airflow can be made... the shape of the air through the MAF is fairly important....

The ideal scenario would be ... you get your descreened MAF and cone filter flow bench tested so new accurate maps could be written.

Luckily the car can just adjust the fuel trims for incorrectly read airflow... so yes the car still runs fine :-)

Its how some of the BIG TURBO guys get round airflow problems... they fit BIG MAF and BIG INJECTORS....

The MAF sees less air so doesnt error and the ecu injects more air than it realises because of the bigger injectors.. but its just a fudge..

We make custom software to match the hardware - so fudges not reqd..

Whitepolo - descreening the MAF is no bad thing as the MAF is a real big restriction in the intake - partly cos its too narrow but largely because of the two screens...

Its all part of the fun - hard core modding :-)
