The MAF and airbox are flow tested so accurate MAPS of voltage v airflow can be made... the shape of the air through the MAF is fairly important....
The ideal scenario would be ... you get your descreened MAF and cone filter flow bench tested so new accurate maps could be written.
Luckily the car can just adjust the fuel trims for incorrectly read airflow... so yes the car still runs fine
Its how some of the BIG TURBO guys get round airflow problems... they fit BIG MAF and BIG INJECTORS....
The MAF sees less air so doesnt error and the ecu injects more air than it realises because of the bigger injectors.. but its just a fudge..
We make custom software to match the hardware - so fudges not reqd..
Whitepolo - descreening the MAF is no bad thing as the MAF is a real big restriction in the intake - partly cos its too narrow but largely because of the two screens...
