Gunna strip it back down, give it a good solid polish down, then build the paint back up i think.

Yeh was back for the weekend, was pretty hectic! sucked having to drive my brothers skoda round whilst working on the car though

not much going on in the world of my lil polo, everything is due next month, insurance etc the works.. so somehow need to finance that so just been playing around n trialling some new cleaning jobbies..like the car lack brand and opti-seal - just trying to find the best combo of stuff to make silver look at its shinest

Your flaking issues will be because of poor adhesion, Did u guys key up the area and make it like non shiny as in scrathed it and did u use the correct halfords cleaner and plastic primer with plastic cleaner on the plastic bits obviously lol , allowing time between coats aswell???

Halfords paint is poor by any means!

It's not the plastic parts I'm having issues with as they're great, it was the heat shield. I cleaned the surface, then ran 600 grit over it to key it, but it still flaked. I think I probably should've stripped it down a bit further, maybe it wasn't clean enough before hand?

How would you advise I go about spraying it?

Well u have keyed it up enough for sure, did you use solvent based cleaner, ie panel wipe or summin to clean it with and did u wait in between ur coats as if u didnt that will have a big effect as ur putting like one massive coat on, i take it its a matt finish red heat resistance paint? i would wait 10 mins inbetween coats applying very thin coats, as its matt u dont need to worry a huge amount, take all the paint off and give it a good go over with cleaner and apply thin coats, i would slighty heat inbetween coats not alot at all just warm in the room and heat the sheild before painting aswell buddie!

Yeh i didn't use any solvent based cleaner in the end, I applied roughly four thinnish coats, with use of a hairdryer inbetween the last couple of layers. Also been soaking the cans in warm water before hand to warm the paint.

I'll strip it back down and give it another go, with some proper cleaner, and even thinner and more coats, cheers.

Excluding my rocker cover and re-doing the heat shield, my engine bay parts are finished being sprayed!! They'll go on tomorrow night when I'm home.

This weekend will also see me starting the first stages of The Detail on the Polo!!

It'll be washed dried and clayed on Friday, then the machine polish will finally commence Saturday

Ahhh shoot, I totally forgot about it haha. No, i was going to try and get a lift down, but have organised to go home now!

Very successful weekend in regards to work on the car! Will get pics up when i'm back tonight

Finally got everything put back into the engine bay! really pleased with the results.

I painted the following:
Washerfluid bottle
Coolant bottle
Coolant cap
Brake fluid cap
Power steering cap
Washer fluid cap

Also striped the underbonnet of it's sound deadening and cleaned. Stripped the battery of all stickers. And generally spruced it all up.

Things still to do:
Re-paint the rocker cover (you can notice the flaking on some of the pics)
Paint the Dip stick handle (probably black, maybe red though)
Clean deeper in the bay (only touched the surface)
Get some new strut bolt caps

I also annoyling jabbed the washer fluid bottle with a screwdriver and a bit flaked off, so that needs re-doing.

very tidy engine bay now, massive difference from before!

for your dipstick handle, i would definetley paint it red.
