idle problem

Post by Danair »

Hi, I am new to this excellent forum.
My wifes 98 1.0L suffers from a fast idle (approx 1500 rpm) which drops to normal after approx 20 seconds.
I have removed the throttle body to clean and noticed oil in the air filter housing. The oil level on the dipstick was too high so I dropped about
0.5 L. The crankcase breather pipe is damaged but doesnt appear to leak - I have ordered a replacement from vw. It appears to be difficult to remove from the crankcase.
I bought a new water temp sensor from GSF today but it is different to the origional and doesn`t fit as well - leaks if moved slightly. It has a metal end and the only way it fits is to fit the sealing ring against this metal end, held slightly loose by the circlip. I cannot make use of the yellow ring.
The idle is slightly better 1200 rpm dropping to normal after 15 secs. Will the ecu adapt to this new sensor?

Any help would be much appreciated. :?

Thanks
Dan

if you've taken off the throttle body
youll probably need to reset the basic settings , can only do this with a diagnostic computer

Excellent news, The car is now running perfectly. I am surprised that the water temp sensor makes such a difference. Had I taken it to a garage, they would have charged lots to repair. :o
This forum was a very lucky find. I still have to replace the breather pipe.
Any tips?
