Want to install Led Strip replacing the Trunk light.

Post by massimo23 »

I would like to install a 1 metre led white strip an the inside of the trunk. Would I need to keep the led strip power under 5w?
Is it enough to connect directly to the bulb or is a resistor needed?
I found a T10 W5W LED Bulb Light Wire Harness Adapter on amazon:

Thanks.

I've not seen this type of mod before. Should be simple enough and I would be interested if you can make it work.

Looking at Aliexpress the longer units don;t appear to specify the wattage but there is a shorter one which specifies 5w. https://www.aliexpress.com/item/YCCPAUT ... 83398.html

or a longer one here at 3w although it looks a bit fragile for boot space https://www.aliexpress.com/item/2pcs-Su ... 47425.html

Rerouting the wire from the original lamp would be easy enough (to, say, the middle back of the boot space) and leaving the original fitting in place would be ideal in case you needed to unmod.

Hmm, an interesting proposal, massimo23. For me, doing something like that would possibly introduce some installation and operational questions, such as:

1. Do you choose to use the adaptor you've found and therefore connect the new lamp in parallel with the existing OEM 5W filament lamp?

2. The same as in 1 but removing the filament bulb?

3. Is the OEM filament lamp monitored by the onboard electrical control module (lighting system) and therefore would you get a constant fault being flagged whenever the new lamp were operated if you implemented either 1 or 2?

4. By installing what would obviously be a lamp giving higher illumination, would that be contravening any lawful requirement concerning the need for rear-facing vehicle lights to not appear to other motorists at night as though they were front-facing lights? My understanding is that illumination levels toward the front and rear of road vehicles are deliberately kept within certain bounds in order not to (a) dazzle other road users, and (b) to not cause confusion to other road users as to the direction in which the vehicle is either standing or moving.

5. If just surplanting the existing bulb with your adaptor and the new LED lamp introduces onboard control faults, might it be better for you to run a separate 12v supply from an accessory-switched fusebox connection at the dashboard to the trunk, terminating it in a mini-socket of some sort that you hard-fix to the trunk's metalwork (for rigidity sake)? With a mating mini-plug on the end of a lead from the new lamp assembly, you could then just plug the latter in whenever you wanted to and could position it freely. With something like that, where the 12v would come separately off the vehicle battery, you could then operate the new lamp - and I presume the new lamp would have its own built-in switch - with impunity. You could then just remove the existing filament bulb (assuming that wouldn't flag a permanent fault), so that you're not wasting current. If however all you're interested in is a lot more illumination, just leave the existing bulb in place. If you decided to permanently fix the new lamp assembly into the trunk, then possibly the best position for it would be just behind the cill, facing forward. That would illuminate the inside of the trunk quite well, diffusing the light, and it'd be less likely to cause confusion to others (I'm thinking of the night-time roadside breakdown situation, where the trunk lid might be raised). However, I'm fairly certain you'd then not be able to lift the trunk's internal coverboards, to get at the spare wheel, etc

Maybe I myself am over-thinking this, and what I've suggested is a bit of a diversion? You could be right, but I hope this gives you some food for thought.

I was thinking of using a 1m cool white waterproof 3528 led strip with output power of 4.8w. The led strip has polarity so you need to match the positive and negative of the terminals.I will do a direct connection and see if it works fine and also if I get a canbus error.
The can bus error can be sorted either through vcds or with a resistor in parallel.

I found this company selling led strip with wire harness adapter with free can bus error bus it's in the US:

Also I can see two ways of positioning the led strip:
Here at the lower interior trunk:

or at the lower edge of the tray:

Did some testing and the led strip works perfect and great light inside. Kept the strip length to 84 cm which is just about 5w of power using 5050 cool white led. Also putting the strip below facing the boot illuminates all of it and wont affect anyone driving by...
The connector i used do not stay firmly in so i will do a different kind of connection.

Hi So i removed the edge around the Circular part as seen in the image and it fits perfectly.
Also no canbus error and no light flickering ;-)
Also no problem in lifting the trunk's internal coverboard , just push it back a bit...
