@so8- welcome to the forum.
I don’t think I can remember reading of any Polo thefts on the forum. That’s not to say it doesn’t happen though as forum membership may not be representative of the wider 6c model Polo-owning population, although if forum members thefts - or lack of thefts - is anything to go by, it doesn’t seem to be a big issue. Contrast that with a car like the previous generation Ford Fiesta ST and they seem to be a prime theft target - possibly because of poor manufacturer security. There are quite often reports over on fiestastoc.com forum of members’ cars being stolen.
In my opinion, if anyone is intent on stealing a five year old 1 litre Polo, it’s more likely to be an opportunist joyrider rather than a professional thief. I personally wouldn’t fit a tracker which in theory should make a car easier to locate and recover in the event of theft - if my car was stolen, I would prefer that it wasn’t recovered as there’s no telling how it may have been used and abused - if stolen by a joyrider, it’s likely that it will have been ragged and driven within an inch of its life with little or no regard for mechanical sympathy. There’s also a high possibility that it may suffer bodywork damage too while in the hands of a joyrider.
It might be worth fitting some form of visible physical anti theft device such as a Disklok, which will hopefully act as enough of a deterrent, so any would-be perpetrators would move onto easier pickings (and hopefully not your BMW X3!).
General measures worth considering;
- Review and if necessary, upgrade your home security, especially if your cars are parked on your property rather than on the road. Where cars are parked on an owner’s driveway, any would be perpetrators will know which house to break into to steal the keys the vehicle keys, so good home security should help reduce this risk.
- If you have a garage that’s large enough to accommodate the Polo, put it in the garage overnight to remove any temptation of would be perpetrators to help themselves to it- out of sight is out of mind.
- If your X3 is keyless, keep your key fobs in a metal receptacle (metal tin, foil lined Faraday pouch) so the key fob signal can’t be intercepted by signal amplification equipment used by some perpetrators to steal keyless cars. The lining of Faraday pouches can fail over time with use, so they should be tested regularly and replaced if if they’re no longer effective.
